The Australian National University’s Development Policy Centre will host its Pacific Update with the support of KAS Regional Programme Australia and the Pacific again this year.
The multidisciplinary conference takes place from 3 to 5 July 2019 at the University of the South Pacific in Suva/Fiji.
Otago Foreign Policy School, Dunedin
KAS Regional Programme Australia and the Pacific is proud to support the University of Otago in New Zealand’s Foreign Policy School again this year.
The School provides a forum for discussion of current challenges and possible policy solutions.
2. Australia-Germany 1.5 Track Cybersecurity Dialogue, Berlin and Brussels
Cybersecurity has become a priority for political leaders and discussion around these issues is important amongst value-partners and allies to ensure economic and national security for their populations. After the success of our inaugural Cybersecurity Dialogue 2018 in Canberra, this year we are bringing a delegation of Australian cybersecurity experts to Berlin and Brussels.

Roundtable discussions with Mark Hauptmann, Member of the German Bundestag (MP) in Wellington
He will be visiting New Zealand from 15 until 18 April 2019.
Mark Hauptmann, Member of the German Bundestag (MP), was awarded a PM Fellowship by the New Zealand Government. PM Fellowships provide an opportunity for rising political leaders to visit New Zealand and to learn more about, and to intensify, the bilateral relationship between New Zealand and their home country.

These are turbulent times for liberal democracies like Australia and Germany as they face similar political challenges- both internally and externally. Likewise, New Zealand is still adjusting to political changes following the change of power from the National Party to a Labour-New Zealand First-Green coalition.
ASPI-KAS Cybersecurity Fellowship: Exchanging Knowledge and Enhancing Cooperation
KAS Australia and the Pacific and the Australian Strategic Policy Institute are engaging in a new joint initiative intended to enhance cooperation on analysis of current cyber security challenges (February/ March 2019)
In the wake of ongoing hacking attacks from a variety of actors, including documented state-sponsored hacking programs, cyber interference, espionage and targeted data/intellectual property theft, many nations have taken unprecedented steps to protect their countries' critical infrastructure and push back against malicious cyber activities.

2nd Australia-Germany Cybersecurity Dialogue, Berlin and Brussels, June 24 – 28 2019
After the success of our first Australia-Germany Cybersecurity Dialogue in Canberra in 2018, for this year’s dialogue we took a group of Australian experts to Berlin and Brussels. The delegation engaged in theme-focused roundtables and bilateral meetings at relevant ministries and institutions in Berlin and Brussels to examine current challenges and how to best manage them based on multifaceted approaches and bi-lateral/multi-lateral cooperation.
Pacific Update, Suva
The Pacific Update, a multinational conference organised by ANU’s Development Policy Centre in cooperation with the University of the South Pacific (USP) and with the support of KAS Australia and the Pacific as well as the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), was held from 3 to 5 July 2019 at USP in Suva/Fiji.

The University of Otago, with the support of KAS Australia and the Pacific, has held its 54th Otago Foreign Policy School from 28 until 30 June 2019 in Dunedin/New Zealand.

In cooperation with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), KAS Regional Programme Australia and the Pacific brought a high-level delegation of Counter-Terrorism policymakers and experts from Germany and the EU to Australia to discuss current trends, effective counter-strategies and increase cooperation regarding these developments.

On the occasion of the visit of the German Minister of Defence, Dr Ursula von der Leyen, KAS Australia and the Pacific co-hosted a luncheon discussion in cooperation with the German Embassy.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Pacific Office in Fiji, in cooperation with the KAS Regional Programme - Australia and the Pacific, organised a workshop on Political Parties in the Pacific which took place recently in Port Vila, Vanuatu.
Australian-German Dialogue on Asia
In cooperation with the College of Asia and the Pacific at the ANU we conducted for the first time a conference to address the challenges and opportunities offered by the ever-evolving geographical, economic and strategic space of Asia.
Expert and Think Tank discussions in New Zealand
Several meetings and discussions on Asia and the current challenges in the Asia-Pacific region took place with experts and Think Tanks in New Zealand from the 5th to the 7th of September.
