Through the inclusion of Trade and Sustainable Development (TSD) chapters in all of its comprehensive trade agreements, the EU underscores its cooperation-based approach to free trade that fosters sustainable labour and environmental governance. Yet, the implementation of these provisions often remain insufficient.
With all recent EU trade agreements containing similar commitments, the ruling on TSD provisions in the case of South Korea becomes and important opportunity for the EU to insiston the legally binding nature of TSD chapters in order to ensure that EU trade agreements deliver in terms of sustainable development.
