In the academic year 2025, Chiang Mai University recognises the urgent need to address the challenges of climate change and sustainability. To address this, the university’s Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration, together with eight other faculties, has launched a new Bachelor of Science program in Sustainability. The university believes this program is a key step toward preparing future leaders who can make a real difference both nationally and internationally in climate action.
Correspondingly, to advance the outcomes and impacts of the Sustainability program even before entering the undergraduate-leveled education, the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration will host the 2025 Climate Change Hackathon, targeting the participant groups of upper secondary school students in Chiang Mai and also other neighboring provinces. The target participants will be from the group of potential students associated closely with the climate change and sustainability issue which the faculty will evaluate in the first place before inviting. Exchanging closely with experts related to the climate change policy consultation and formulation, this event offers the target participant the opportunity to engage critically with climate policies, both in national and regional levels, and contribute to Thailand’s and Southeast Asia’s sustainable future.
As a university committed to sustainability and climate action, the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration therefore recognises that engaging upper secondary school students who have been associated in the issues is a vital step. This hackathon will provide an opportunity to identify and nurture those potential future leaders in climate change action. The participating students are not only passionate about environmental issues but have also been carefully reviewed and selected by the faculty based on their academic excellence, creativity, and leadership potential. It is also expected that these students will represent a promising new generation with the capacity to think critically, work collaboratively, and bring innovative solutions to complex global challenges.
By involving these high-potential young individuals, the faculty expects that this activity will be dynamic, impactful, and outcome-oriented. The hackathon is designed to encourage them to develop a deeper understanding of climate issues, realise their role in policy process and the significance of efficient and consistent cooperation between countries in the affected region. Ultimately, the event aims to empower them to translate their ideas into concrete policy proposals, further reinforcing the faculty’s vision of fostering young leaders for a sustainable future.
