Amina Rasul-Bernardo, lead convenor of the Philippine Council for Islamic Democracy, was declared “Muslim Democrat of the Year” by the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID) during their 8th Annual Conference last April 27.

KAS Country Representative Klaus Preschle congratulates Ms Rasul-Bernardo stating “…CSID has given the right signal in encouraging Muslim civil society all over the world in taking the lead in crucial debates of our times. The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung is very proud of you in its joy of working with an icon of Muslim leadership.”

The Muslim Democrat of the Year award is given by CSID to one outstanding advocate for democracy in the Muslim world; particular those individuals who overcome hardships or challenges in his/her efforts to promote democracy. The Center for the Study of Islam & Democracy (CSID) is a non-profit organization, based in Washington DC, dedicated to studying Islamic and democratic political thought and merging them into a modern Islamic democratic discourse.

Ms. Rasul follows a distinguished list of past Muslim Democrat awardees which includes: former Malaysian deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Mr. Saadeddine Elothmani, Secretary-General, Party of Justice and Development of Morocco, Iranian scholar Abdolkarim Soroush, and Egyptian democracy activist Saad Eddin Ibrahim.
