2026 marks what would have been the 150th birthday of Konrad Adenauer, (West) Germany’s first post-WWII chancellor. He undoubtedly laid the groundwork for what many of us now take for granted: the European Union. In this roundtable discussion, we will revisit Adenauer's vision for Europe - emphasising reconciliation, economic integration, and unity, especially through Franco-German cooperation – at a time when “Europe [once again] is standing at a decisive turning point in its destiny.” (K. Adenauer (1948)).
What’s the current state of Europe that Adenauer once envisioned, and where are we headed? Are we now, perhaps, edging closer to a European Defence Community, as Adenauer attempted to realise in the early 1950s? Are we at a crossroads or truly united?
Don't miss this opportunity to dive into a lively, thought-provoking discussion about the future of Europe. Join us as we explore these pressing questions, challenge assumptions, and explore what Europe can learn from its past to navigate the challenges of today and tomorrow.
