Tutto in lui era speciale: un vero imperatore “sui generis”. L’imperatore Ottone III era figlio e successore al trono dell’imperatore tedesco Ottone II. Sua madre Teofane, principessa bizantina di Costantinopoli e nipote dell’imperatore orientale Niceforo I, educò il giovane Ottone, nel pieno della Germania “barbarica”, ispirata dalla cultura ellenica e insegnandogli il senso della maestosità. Da bambino visse nel palazzo di Aquisgrana tra riti bizantini e lussi orientali. Studiosi, astronomi, matematici, filosofi, poeti, umanisti e vescovi circondavano il giovane imperatore come se egli si trovasse nella corte di Costantinopoli.
Subito dopo la morte del padre, il giovane Ottone nel 983, a soli tre anni, al fine di garantire la dinastia degli Ottoni, venne incoronato imperatore nella Basilica di San Pietro a Roma. Per l’epoca era abbastanza inusuale che una madre, Teofane, e una nonna, Adelaide, si occupassero degli affari di stato invece del minore. Quando il giovane imperatore nel 996 si recò nuovamente a Roma aveva compiuto 16 anni e nella città predominava la potente famiglia patrizia Crescenzi, la quale si era ribellata agli imperatori tedeschi e contro i papi tedeschi da loro designati. Quando la famiglia Crescenzi cacciò il Papa Giovanni XV dalla città, di cui aveva all’inizio sostenuto la carica, il Papa chiamò in aiuto l’imperatore Ottone III. Il Papa però morì prima che l’imperatore giungesse a Roma con le sue truppe. Senza ulteriori indugi nominò suo cugino, il Duca Ottone di Carinzia a papa con il nome di Gregorio V e dal quale si fece poi incoronare. Un papa venticinquenne che incoronò un imperatore di sedici anni: per quanto sarebbe durata?
Non appena Ottone III fu sulla via del ritorno per raggiungere Aquisgrana, i romani cacciarono il Papa tedesco e ne nominarono un altro della loro cerchia. Quando Ottone III venne a conoscenza di ciò, fece ritorno a Roma e ridesignò Gregorio V sul trono pontificio. Nel 999 Gregorio V morì e Ottone nuovamente scelse un papa tedesco, il suo amico e mentore Gerberto di Aurillac con il nome di Silvestro II. Giovanni Crescenzi, che si era barricato a Castel Sant’Angelo, venne condannato a una morte violenta, atto dai romani mai perdonato all’imperatore. L’autorità imperiale sia a Roma sia nel resto del territorio italico non venne mai data per scontata e dovette costantemente essere riaffermata. Ottone aveva compreso che per affermarsi come imperatore presso la città pontificia e proteggere quindi il papa avrebbe dovuto stabilirsi permanentemente a Roma.
Si ipotizza che l’imperatore Ottone III avesse scelto come sua residenza romana il colle Palatino, allora in stato di abbandono, sul quale avevano già risieduto gli imperatori romani. Sembra più plausibile, però, che egli preferisse il colle Aventino in cui nel X secolo si trovavano le residenze signorili delle più importanti famiglie romane. Presumibilmente Ottone III fece trasformare un antico palazzo in rovina, accanto alla Basilica e il convento dei Santi Bonifacio e Alessio, in una modesta dimora imperiale romana con una sala del trono. Purtroppo non restano tracce architettoniche della costruzione.
Un segno della scelta sull´Aventino potrebbe essere che l’imperatore dette il suo sostegno a questo convento, perché qui i monaci venivano istruiti in varie lingue: greco, latino e slavo, e fece a loro dono della sua preziosa cappa imperiale.
Dall’alto del colle Aventino, l’idealista Ottone III, aspirava ad un impero cristiano d’oriente e d’occidente riunificato attraverso una stretta alleanza con il papa immaginata, però, sotto la sua stessa guida e con sede imperiale a Roma. Idea utopica? Presso la sua corte sia l’esempio bizantino sia l’esempio romano dovevano fondersi a livello politico, culturale e architettonico. Egli aveva già introdotto la lingua greca tanto che si adottarono degli appellativi greci. Cariche importanti furono assegnate ai patrizi romani. Inoltre riteneva importante vivere da buon cristiano, curando i rapporti con i monaci ascetici e intraprendendo pellegrinaggi per scontare le proprie pene, aspirando quindi a condurre una vita secondo il dettato cristiano.
Già prima del suo viaggio a Roma aveva inviato il vescovo di Milano in qualità di cerimoniere alla corte imperiale di Costantinopoli in quanto egli avrebbe voluto prendere in moglie una principessa bizantina, delle stesse origini della madre Teofane. Il matrimonio avrebbe aiutato a rafforzare le relazioni con Costantinopoli. Il contratto matrimoniale fu accettato e si preparò il viaggio della futura sposa bizantina.
Ma a Roma si riaccese l’antica lotta di potere tra le famiglie nobiliari che volevano conquistare il trono pontificio. Inizialmente venne accettata l’autorità imperiale tant’è che si era costituita persino una prima frazione imperiale. Ma dal momento in cui l’imperatore aveva posto sul trono pontificio il tedesco Silvestro II il popolo romano non ne volle sapere di una rinnovata alleanza tra il papa e le famiglie tedesche tanto che nel 1001 si verificò una rivolta popolare contro l’imperatore e il papa che vennero cacciati da Roma e furono costretti a fuggire a Ravenna.
Ottone III dovette attendere troppo a lungo per i rinforzi militari provenienti dalla Germania per riconquistare Roma. L’imperatore si ammalò di malaria, o fu forse avvelenato? Con il suo seguito giunse solo fino a Castel Paterno sul Monte Soratte dove viveva in esilio il suo fedele amico Gerberto, il destituito papa Silvestro II. A gennaio del 1002 il giovane imperatore morì a soli 22 anni senza lasciare eredi alla dinastia degli Ottoni. Il suo sogno si concluse qui. Come luogo di eterno riposo avrebbe auspicato alla cappella palatina di Aquisgrana accanto a Carlo Magno. Mentre la salma del giovane imperatore venne imbalsamata e portata con tanta fatica dai suoi soldati sulle Alpi del nord, la nave con la sua futura sposa sbarcò in Italia da Costantinopoli con il suo seguito.
Se all’imperatore fosse riuscito di eleggere Roma a capitale indiscussa dell’intero impero Romano, quali sviluppi storici avrebbe avuto tale evento? In che cosa fallì? Nessun altro sarebbe stato più adatto di lui a realizzare questi progetti poiché sin dalla nascita erano insite in lui tanto la cultura occidentale tanto quella orientale. Anche se per soli pochi anni l’idealista imperatore Ottone III portò un barlume di cultura nella città di Roma risvegliandola dal crepuscolo medievale.
