Smaller, bourgeois-conservative, constant

by Anja Czymmeck, Nele Katharina Wissmann

France has a new government.

President Emmanuel Macron and the new Prime Minister Gabriel Attal presented a streamlined and largely conservative government on 11 January, which is characterized by the retention of several political heavyweights and the unexpected arrival of former Sarkozy minister Rachida Dati in the culture portfolio.

Most of the key ministries in the French government remain unchanged. Bruno Le Maire will retain the economy and finance portfolio, but will also be given responsibility for energy, which will be central to the political debate in the coming months. Macron and Attal have opted for the establishment of so-called super ministries - the topic of energy was previously managed by a fully-fledged ministry headed by Agnès Pannier-Runacher. The conservative interior and defense ministers Gérald Darmanin and Sébastien Lecornu as well as justice minister Eric Dupond-Moretti also remain constants in the government.
