Giving Effect to the Law on War Crimes, Crimes against Humanity and Genocide in Southern Africa

On 13-14 June 2011, International Criminal Law Services (ICLS), the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria (CHR) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation organised a workshop for government experts from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. The workshop was sponsored by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Government of Finland, the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) and the Open Society Foundation for South Africa.

Media and the Law

On April 7, the launch of the book „Media and the Law“ took place at the Intercontinental Hotel in Nairobi. The book was edited by the ICJ Kenya together with KAS Rule of Law Programme. The key note speaker was the German Ambassador to Kenya, Ms Margit Hellwig-Boette. The publication is a handbook for journalists, which is designed to serve as a manual regarding their rights and obligations under the new Kenyan constitution. The event also highlighted the specific importance of a free press in a democratic society.

Visit of judges from the EAC Court

From 5th to 12th of March 2011 a delegation of five judges and the registrar of the East African Community Court of Justice visited German and European institutions, namely the Federal Constitutional Court, the Federal Court of Justice, the Federal Ministry of Justice, the German Judges Academy, the Association of German Judges, the High Court of Berlin, the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights. They were accompanied by Prof. Roschmann. The visit gave interesting and important insights into the German and European systems.

Coming soon after the promulgation of the new constitution in Kenya, this conference sought to identify the role of the judiciary and jurists in ensuring that the implementation of the new constitution set good foundation for the realization of the rule of law and constitutionalism in Kenya.

The forum sought to offer an opportunity to the participants to exchange views, ideas and experiences of their respective countries on pertinent issues relating to the rule of law with the aim of helping them develop common strategies in the resolution of some of the common challenges not only for the benefit of their respective countries in particular but also for the benefit of the entire region in general.
