Altre tracce del passaggio dell’imperatore tedesco Ottone III a Roma si trovano sull’isola Tiberina. In un piccolo spazio sono presenti fino ad oggi su quest’isola diverse istituzioni legate dall’antichità al culto salutifero. Da una parte l’ospedale Fate Bene Fratelli che risale al XVI secolo, accanto vi si trova una farmacia e la chiesa San Giovanni Calibita. Di fronte si erge la torre medievale della famiglia Caetani con la casa padronale di allora nella quale sono oggi collocati un piccolo ristorante e un bar. Al lato della piazza dal 1775 si trova la sede della confraternita “Sacconi Rossi”, come riportato da una targa d’ottone tirata a lucido, la quale, in passato, aveva il compito di dare sepoltura a morti per peste, cadaveri trovati nel fiume e morti senza congiunti. Subito accanto si trova l’ingresso dell’ospedale israelitico, ora attivo soltanto al livello ambulatoriale. Il monumento in pietra posto al centro della piazza ricorda il dissolvimento dello stato pontificio nel XIX secolo e i quattro santi legati all’isola Tiberina.
“In Hac Basilica Requiescit Corpus S. Bartholomaei Apostoli” – a caratteri cubitali si trova il nome del Santo Bartolomeo scritto sulla facciata della chiesa al quale è dedicato l’edificio. Questa chiesa è piena di misteri. Nel XII secolo venne ristrutturata e durante l’epoca barocca nuovamente trasformata. Ma molto prima, nel 997 l’imperatore Ottone III fece costruire sulle rovine dell’antico tempio Esculapio una prima chiesa di cui si conserva oggi solo una cripta. Il nome dell’imperatore appaia ancora in una iscrizione sopra la porta dell’ingresso alla chiesa nel portico.
Si nota all’interno qualcosa di veramente particolare posto davanti all’altare principale. Sugli scalini è posta, infatti, una piccola fontana tonda di marmo in cui ancora oggi si intravede un’inscrizione purtroppo illeggibile. La fontana di per sé indica la sorgente sacra nel tempio antico di Esculapio la quale rimase conservata a lungo anche nella chiesa di Ottone. Delle quattro figure rappresentate nel rilievo anteriore si individua in primo piano Cristo con l’aureola, di lato il Santo Bartolomeo con il coltello ed il Santo Adalberto con il pastorale. Sul lato posteriore, inginocchiandosi, si nota il ritratto dell’Imperatore Ottone III con la corona, lo scettro e con il disco sul quale è scalfito il disegno della chiesa. Con ciò l’imperatore viene riconosciuto come fondatore della chiesa.
L’altare principale è posto su una preziosa vasca di porfido rosso scuro proveniente da un impianto termale dell’antichità nella quale si trovano le reliquie del Santo Bartolomeo come indicato nell’iscrizione. La storia relativa alle membra dell’apostolo Bartolomeo è densa di mistero. L’Imperatore Ottone III sembra le abbia sottratte dal Duomo di Benevento e portate a Roma custodite in un grande piatto di bronzo che oggi è appeso sulla parete a destra dell’altare. La vasca di porfido si trova in questo luogo solo dal XVI secolo quindi resta un mistero a chi appartengano le membra qui conservate.
La cappella del coro di sinistra è dedicata a San Adalberto, Vescovo di Praga, a cui l’imperatore Ottone III era altamente devoto e del quale portò a Roma la reliquia del suo braccio. In onore di Adalberto l’imperatore fece costruire la chiesa sull’isola Tiberina. Sebbene successivamente la chiesa venne dedicata al più famoso San Bartolomeo, dopo le cui reliquie furono portate da Benevento.
La cripta, per lo più inaccessibile, posta sotto il presbiterio è l’unico elemento costruttivo rimasto dalla chiesa di Ottone. È evidente una variazione strutturale poiché nel XII secolo per motivi statici furono murate le navate e le colonne e fu introdotta una nuova volta. Del tutto particolari sono i capitelli delle colonne con aquile imperiali risalenti al X secolo.
Per oltre 400 anni la chiesa di Bartolomeo è stata collegata con il convento francescano, che nel 1994 insieme alla chiesa venne consegnata alla Comunità di Sant’Egidio che ancora oggi ne ha il patrocinio.
Lasciando la chiesa ci ritroviamo traslati nel turbolento e rumoroso traffico cittadino, particolarmente vivace sul lungotevere che divide l’isola: forti sono le sirene delle ambulanze che ci riportano al presente. Per poter ancora un attimo riflettere sul giovane imperatore tedesco Ottone III e sulla sua chiesa apostolica sull’isola Tiberina nonché sulle sue utopie romantiche di un impero riunificato di Oriente e di Occidente e come pure sull’introduzione della lingua greca ci si deve sedere con tranquillità sulla sponda del fiume dove si ode solo lo scrosciare dell’acqua.
