More than a year into COVID-19, the pandemic continues to affect all facets of daily life all around the world with a considerable impact on our democracies. To avoid the further spreading of the virus, parliamentary, regional or local elections are re-scheduled, alternative voting processes are introduced and new technologies are in the center of attention. Although geographically separated, South Korea and Germany aim on fostering cooperation and an active dialogue during the pandemic to assess best practices and plan further steps to this point. In this regard, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung together with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea held their third digital expert dialogue on "COVID-19 and Public Governance: The Impact of COVID-19 on Election Management and Voting Behavior in South Korea and Europe" on May 20th 2021.

An Exchange of Experiences between South Korea and Germany

The COVID-19 pandemic shows once again how irrelevant national borders are in a globalized world and how detrimental an initially local issue can be for the entire globe. Although geographically separated, South Korea and Germany aim at fostering cooperation and an active dialogue during the pandemic to assess best practices and plan further steps to this point. In this regard, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung together with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) organized the expert dialogue "COVID-19 and Public Governance: Effective Global Vaccination Strategies for Vaccine Access" on April 29th 2021.

With its policy guidelines for the Indo-Pacific, the German federal government lays down its commitment to engage with the world’s most dynamic region and to shape the narrative surrounding it. Germany’s Indo-Pacific partners will keep a close eye on the tangible progress it makes in the seven key areas defined by the guidelines: multilateralism, climate change, security, rule of law, free trade, digitalization and education.

Ein Erfahrungsaustausch zwischen Südkorea und Deutschland

Die COVID-19 Pandemie kennt bekanntermaßen keine Ländergrenzen. Als demokratische Mittelmächte und Erfolgsbeispiele für die Eindämmung der Pandemie sind die Bundesrepublik Deutschland und die Republik Korea trotz geographischer Entfernung enge Partner in der Identifikation bestmöglicher Maßnahmen, um Infektionszahlen gering zu halten. Der digitale Expertendialog „Covid-19 und öffentliche Verwaltung: Kritische Erfolgsfaktoren im öffentlichen Krisenmanagement– in Deutschland und Korea“, organisiert von der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung gemeinsam mit der Yonsei Universität Korea, fand dabei mit etwa 90 hochrangigen Teilnehmenden beider Länder in hoffnungsvoller Atmosphäre statt: Am Tag der Veranstaltung wurde der Impfstoffes von Biontech/Pfizer durch die europäischen Nachbarn in Großbritannien erstmals zugelassen. In seiner Eröffnung betonte Dr. Peter Hefele, Leiter der Abteilung Asien und Pazifik der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, die immense Bedeutung, gemeinsam an globalen Ansätzen der Pandemiebewältigung zu arbeiten. Prof. Dr. Yeon-Seob Ha, Vizepräsident des Internationalen Campus der Yonsei Universität verwies in diesem Zusammenhang auf die Wichtigkeit von Führungsstärke auf nationaler und internationaler Ebene für eine erfolgreiche Bekämpfung von globalen Gesundheitsrisiken.

Jährlich lädt die Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung die Spitzenrepräsentanten der Institutionen Europas ein, über ihre Vision von Europa zu sprechen. In der elften Europa-Rede erläuterte der Präsident des Europäischen Parlaments, David Sassoli, die europäische Krisenbewältigung in der Corona-Pandemie, wieso es mehr europäisches Regieren braucht und wie die Konferenz über die Zukunft Europas die EU voranbringen kann.
