Deepening the Partnership at the 11th EU–Korea Summit

by Dr. Olaf Wientzek, Sven Nicolay

Focus on digital agreements, economic dialogue and security

At the 11th summit between the European Union and the Republic of Korea on June 10th in Brussels, both sides agreed to further deepen their already close cooperation. Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen were representing the EU, while President Lee Jae Myung participated for the Republic of Korea. The most significant outcome of the meeting was the signing of the Digital Trade Agreement. In addition, several further initiatives were launched or strengthened, particularly in the areas of economic cooperation and security. The summit constitutes another building block in the EU’s broader efforts to deepen partnerships with like-minded countries across various policy fields and to enhance its own resilience in an increasingly volatile geopolitical environment.
