Youth4Policy Migration Fellowship

Introduction to Migration and Forced Displacement.

Youth4Policy is an initiative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung aimed at empowering the next generation of policy experts to meaningfully contribute to policy analysis and public debates. Youth4Policy serves as a capacity development lab for youth leaders from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds such as academia, civil society, and public service with a motivation to research and analyze specific policy questions from a youth perspective. Particularly for the next five years, the fellowship program shall attract young researchers who are interested to study and explore pertinent policy questions around migration and forced displacement issues in Uganda and South Sudan.

An Innovation Fireplace that brought together Ugandan startups and German politicians

Ugandan Startup Ecosystem

On 14th of June, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), together with Media Challenge Initiative (MCI), hosted the Innovation Fireplace: A Panel discussion and exhibition of the Ugandan Startup Ecosystem at MCI Media Hub. More than 30 startup innovators met with a delegation of German Members of Parliament to discuss startup investment, political economy, ease of doing business and to showcase their innovations. The discussion focused on the prospects of Uganda's younger generation for investment and innovation to promote entrepreneurship and employment. Afterwards, the German delegates visited the various exhibition booths and talked to leading young innovators.

Interactive Exhibition

Games and Politics is a touring exhibition by Goethe Institut that has been travelling around the globe, last stop was Addis Ababa in Ethopia. This year’s edition is being hosted in Kampala (March - May) in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Uganda and South Sudan and the Design Hub Kampala. It is based on the exhibition Global Games by the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medien) in Karlsruhe, Germany, and focuses explicitly on political games created since 2004.

Reporting about Human Rights

The public dialogue in Mbale held by local representatives of politics, police, civic society and the media focused on human rights reporting as well as on concrete assaults of journalists. On basis of a theoretical training in the following workshop journalists produced stories about human rights violations on the ground.

Eastern Uganda Students Debate Gender Issues

The Inter–Institutions debate tournament of 9th April in Soroti was a competition between five institutions of higher learning. They included Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Kumi University, Uganda College of Commerce (UCC), the East Africa Civil Aviation Academy and the Comprehensive School of Nursing - Soroti. The debate which is part of a series was organised by ACFODE in cooperation with KAS. It was held along the theme: "Involvement of the youth in the promotion of gender equality”

Journalism and Human Rights

Public Dialogue and Workshop in Kasese

Journalists from Kasese and the surrounding districts met for a public dialogue followed by a three-day workshop to discuss the role of journalists as bearers and promoters of human rights. The lively discussion about the freedom of the press in Uganda between different stakeholders during the dialogue provided a starting point for the subsequent workshop. Journalists participating in the workshopwere trained in reporting about human rights after a theoretical briefing about investigative journalism and the concept of human rights.

New UMDF-Board Elected

The Uganda Media Development Foundation (UMDF) has elected a new Executive Board. Mr. J.B Wasswa, a media consultant and Makerere University lecturer, was elected Board President with Mr. Mpimbaza Hashaka as Vice President. Others elected were Mr. Moses Sserwanga as General Secretary, Mr. Paul Kihika as Treasurer and Ms. Joyce Tabingwa as Education Secretary. Ms. Lucy Lapoti and Mr. Collins Juuko joined the board as committee members. The elections occurred at the March 18th general meeting.

Innovatives Assessment in sieben ugandischen Distrikten

Gefördert mit Mitteln der Europäischen Union führte die KAS Uganda erstmals ein umfangreiches Assessment zum Zustand von Demokratie und politischem Pluralismus auf lokaler Ebene durch. Dabei wurde ein innovativer Ansatz gewählt, der vor allem die aktive Teilhabe lokaler Akteure am Assessment-Prozess gewährleisten sollte.
