Youth4Policy Migration Fellowship

Introduction to Migration and Forced Displacement.

Youth4Policy is an initiative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung aimed at empowering the next generation of policy experts to meaningfully contribute to policy analysis and public debates. Youth4Policy serves as a capacity development lab for youth leaders from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds such as academia, civil society, and public service with a motivation to research and analyze specific policy questions from a youth perspective. Particularly for the next five years, the fellowship program shall attract young researchers who are interested to study and explore pertinent policy questions around migration and forced displacement issues in Uganda and South Sudan.

An Innovation Fireplace that brought together Ugandan startups and German politicians

Ugandan Startup Ecosystem

On 14th of June, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), together with Media Challenge Initiative (MCI), hosted the Innovation Fireplace: A Panel discussion and exhibition of the Ugandan Startup Ecosystem at MCI Media Hub. More than 30 startup innovators met with a delegation of German Members of Parliament to discuss startup investment, political economy, ease of doing business and to showcase their innovations. The discussion focused on the prospects of Uganda's younger generation for investment and innovation to promote entrepreneurship and employment. Afterwards, the German delegates visited the various exhibition booths and talked to leading young innovators.

Interactive Exhibition

Games and Politics is a touring exhibition by Goethe Institut that has been travelling around the globe, last stop was Addis Ababa in Ethopia. This year’s edition is being hosted in Kampala (March - May) in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Uganda and South Sudan and the Design Hub Kampala. It is based on the exhibition Global Games by the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medien) in Karlsruhe, Germany, and focuses explicitly on political games created since 2004.

“Promoting Good governance, Accountability and Civic engagement at the local government level through social Media

Through the project “Promoting Good governance, Accountability and Civic engagement at the local government level through Media” CEMCOD in partnership with KAS engaged and trained 16 local government leaders in the Ankole region (Mbarara, Ibanda, Kiruhura and Isingiro) in the effective use of media, with special emphasis on social media platforms in improving good governance, transparency and accountability in the management of public affairs, citizen engagement and delivery of social services.

The Lira debate was a second in the 2016 debating series which seeks to evaluate youth engagement in the 2016 polls as well as identify and document strategies for a more constructive and sustained youth political engagement beyond elections. The debate is also build-up into the 2016 annual youth conference portended for May 2016, which will also address the same topic from a national perspective.

GAIN-Uganda to develop civic education measures targeting the local level

GAIN-Uganda intends to scale up its civic education engagement with the community as one of the ways to promote good governance and accountability at the local level in Uganda. GAIN- Uganda is comprised of local organisations that have interest in promoting accountability at the local level. The membership which is spread across 11 districts of Uganda provides a wide reaching effect once effective strategies and tools for engaging the public are developed.

MBARARA UNIVERSITY GUILD PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

NURTURING A NEW BREED OF YOUNG LEADERS IN UGANDA

The debate aimed at nurturing and inculcating the key tenets of democratic electoral competition amongst the young Ugandan elite who are in this case viewed as the next generation of the country’s politicians and election managers. A series of student dialogues and intellectual engagement organized in partnership with the University Forum on Governance (UNIFOG), the 2016 Mbarara University of Science and Technology Guild Presidential debate contest brought together eight guild presidential aspirants and offered them a leveled ground to lay their political manifestos.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND LOCAL GOVERNANCE IN UGANDA

Social Media for Effective Local Government Service Delivery

With the deepening of internet penetration and the increasing popularity of social media, technical savviness is a necessity if such platforms are to be used as a democracy advancement tool. During a three days residential workshop, 20 senior local government officials including the Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs), District Information Officers and Community Development Officers from 5 districts of Eastern Uganda received a special and practical training on social media usage to enhance their skills of using these platforms as a tool for improving local government service delivery.

2016 MAKERERE UNIVERSITY GUILD PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE

Promoting democratic principles and values by deepening the debate culture in Uganda’s Leadership Competition

An annual event organized in partnership with the University Forum on Governance (UNIFOG), the 2016 Makerere University Guild Presidential debate contest brought together 12 guild presidential aspirants and offered a contest for formal argumentation and a ground for intellectual engagement on their campaign manifestos.
