In late August 2021, Kamala Harris was the first US Vice President to visit the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi since establishing diplomatic relations with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam 26 years ago. That her first trip to Asia after assuming office led her, besides Singapore, to Vietnam of all places, reflects the Southeast Asian state’s strategic importance for Washington. Hanoi, too, is aware of the significance attached to this “comprehensive partnership”. Yet they (still) refrain from calling it ‘strategic’ – a semantic consideration for their big neighbour to the North.

Newest developments on the Belarusian-Latvian border

On August 2, Agnė Bilotaitė, the Lithuanian Minister of Interior signed an order which allowed board guards to send back migrants to Belarus.[1] Following this, there was a rapid increase of migrants crossing the Latvian border from Belarus. In the four days, from August 7 until August 10, 218 illegal migrants had been detained at the border. As the border crisis deepened, on August 10 the Government of Latvia declared a state of emergency in the border municipalities. The state of emergency is in force until November 10.[2]

Neue nationalistische Partei in der Türkei

Zafer Partisi – Partei des Sieges?

In der Türkei rumort es in der nationalistischen Szene. Am 26. August 2021 wurde beim türkischen In-nenministerium offiziell die Parteigründung der Zafer Partisi (deutsch: Partei des Sieges) eingetragen. Nach der Gründung der İYİ-Partei 2017 als Abspaltung der rechtsnationalistischen MHP, findet nun eine weitere Parteineugründung im nationalistischen Parteienspektrum statt. Die neue Partei um den ehe-maligen stellvertretenden Vorsitzenden der MHP und der İYİ-Partei, Prof. Dr. Ümit Özdağ, rekrutiert sich vor allem aus alten MHP-Kadern, welche 2017 aus Unmut gegenüber den langjährigen Parteivorsitzen-den Devlet Bahçeli zur İYİ-Partei gewandert sind.
