A Survey of Public Opinion in the Middle East and North Africa

Ten years after the start of the uprisings that swept through the Arab world, the region’s socio-economic disparities remain a key challenge. Trust in political parties and parliaments is low, but civil society organisations are highly respected. A proper civil society of engaged citizens seems to be emerging in many countries. While traditional external actors, such as the US and France, are losing influence in the region, China, Turkey, and Russia are assuming a more important role. Meanwhile, Germany enjoys high standing in the region.

Ergebnisse der Regionalwahlen in Frankreich 2021

Eine Wahl ohne Wählerinnen und Wähler

Die französischen Regionalwahlen am 20. und 27. Juni 2021 haben in der großen Mehrheit der Regionen keine politische Veränderung herbeigeführt. Alle Regionalpräsidentinnen und -präsidenten in Zentralfrankreich wurden im Amt bestätigt. Klarer Sieger der Wahl ist das bürgerlich-konservative Lager, das gestärkt aus der Wahl hervorgeht. Auch die Sozialisten konnten ihre Bastionen behaupten. Wahlverlierer sind die Regierungspartei La République en Marche und der rechtspopulistische Rassemblement National. Die Wahlen erfuhren ein sehr geringes Interesse in der französischen Bevölkerung. Nur 35 Prozent der Französinnen und Franzosen haben beim zweiten Wahlgang ihre Stimme abgegeben – ein neuer Negativrekord.

Indiens Regionalwahlen inmitten einer verheerenden COVID-Krise

Hunderte Millionen schreiten in fünf Regionen zu den Urnen

Im Zeitraum vom 27. März bis zum 29. April 2021 wählten die Bürger in den indischen Bundesstaaten West-Bengalen, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala und dem Unionsterritorium Puducherry ihre legislativen Vertreter. Es handelte sich hierbei um Regionalwahlen in einer aus deutscher Sicht kaum vorstellbaren Größenordnung, da sie eine Bevölkerungszahl betrafen, die selbst diejenige Brasiliens (ca. 213 Millionen) übersteigt. Die Wahlen waren zudem ein Gradmesser für die tatsächliche Fähigkeit des indischen Premierministers Narendra Modi und seiner auf Unionsebene regierenden Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Regierungen in Teilen des Landes zu bilden, in denen sie bisher kaum Einfluss ausgeübt hatten. Bislang regierte die BJP von diesen Staaten nur in Assam.
