Solar Energy in East Africa – Opportunities, Challenges and the Impact of COVID-19

The outbreak of the novel corona virus disease has impacted renewable energy in Africa. Although much of the world is experiencing reduced energy demand due to on-going lockdown measures which has resulted in unstable oil prices, and traditional logic suggests that low oil prices can make renewable energy less competitive. However, African Governments and relevant stakeholders are recognising the important role renewable energy (and in particular solar energy) can play in fighting the pandemic and in assisting businesses to stay afloat following this disruption.

The Trade Agenda for the 46th U.S. President –Advancing Global Economic Order?

As Joe Biden takes office as the 46th President of the United States the country is at a turning point in its trade policy, one where rules are likely to move to the forefront. A key question is whether in response to the weakening of the nearly 75-year old multilateral trading system the United States will lead a concerted effort with like-minded economies to create high-standard rules that will help prevent the deconstruction of the trading system into competing blocs of laws, standards, and norms.

Investitionsklima in Serbien

Serbiens wirtschaftspolitischer Weg in Coronazeiten

Libya's fateful year

Where does Libya stand one year after the Berlin Libya Conference?

2020 Libya set an important course for achieving (security-relevant) political and economic progress towards a sustainable political solution to the conflict that has been ongoing since 2011. The Berlin Conference on Libya convened by Chancellor Merkel on 19 January 2020 was a significant contribution on that way. Parliamentary and presidential elections are scheduled to take place in the North African country on 24 December 2021. The first weeks of this year will show whether this remains a realistic scenario. If the agreed deadline to withdraw all foreign fighters from Libya by 21 January is not met, Libya will once again start an uncertain and probably turbulent year.
