Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir warns of the impacts of a trade war between the superpowers

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir is warning of the impacts of a trade war between the US and China on Southeast Asia. "The US-China mega trade war may be a symptom of something far worse – growing rivalry between the world's two biggest powers developing into another Cold War." Malaysia depends on both the US and Chinese markets and for geopolitical reasons is caught in between. One way to overcome the hurdle is to build capacity and to develop competitiveness, particularly among ASEAN neighbours, to cushion the impact of the collision of superpowers. Tun Dr. Mahathir said this in his keynote address at the Institute of Strategic & International Studies Malaysia’s Praxis conference 2019 themed “Malaysia beyond 2020” on October 21 in Kuala Lumpur. KAS has been cooperating with ISIS Malaysia for several years, on the annual “Malaysia-Germany Security Dialogue”, and is now supporting the “ISIS Praxis Conference” series.

Rumänien hat eine neue Regierung

Premierminister Ludovic Orban gewinnt Vertrauensvotum

70 YEARS GERMAN BASIC LAW-THE GERMAN CONSTITUTION AND ITS COURT

Landmark Decisions of The Federal Constitutional Court of Germany in The Area of Fundamental Rights

The German Basic Law – the Constitution of the Federal. Republic of Germany – has been in force for 70 years now and it is the foundation of democratic statehood in Germany. The Basic Law’s central core is the principle of the rule of law as expressed by the broader German concept of the “Rechtsstaatsprinzip”. The protection of fundamental individual rights is one important cornerstone of this “Rechtsstaatsprinzip”. As guardian of the Basic Law, the Federal Constitutional Court has shaped these rights through interpretation by a large body of case law. Taking note of the growing interest among scholars not only in continental Europe but more so in the Common Law world, an extensive English translation of that jurisprudence is therefore very timely. This volume features 68 cases in regard to the basic rights. A general introduction to the Basic Law and the doctrine of fundamental rights strives to provide some contextual background to enable readers to better understand the comprehensive jurisprudence. In addition, there are specific annotations to each decision or a set of decisions with background information on the individual case. The last chapter suggests additional material in English for further research.

Nip it in the bud!

The EU Commission Strengthens the Rule of Law

The Rule of Law is one of the fundamental values of our shared European set of values. The EU Commission has long been committed to strengthening the Rule of Law within the Union. In its Communication of 17 July 2019, the EU Commission presents its blueprint for action to further develop the existing and new mechanisms. It is evident that the Commission´s aim is to take action much earlier than it has hitherto been the case. The following paper presents the individual suggestions, places them in an overall context and takes a critical look at them. The mills of Brussels grind slowly. What will become reality depends on the political struggle in the coming months and probably years. It is to be expected that the process id strengthening the Rule of Law within the EU will be continued under the designated EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
