Although civil society activities in Namibia had subsided considerably since the mid-1990s, Namibia’s civil society sector has witnessed a major shift in recent years. With the combination of grassroots knowledge and experience CSOs are increasingly viewed as active agents of change and inspiration within and beyond local communities. Despite its clouded history, the civil society sector continues to play a significant role in strengthening development cooperation within Namibia and diving the country’s development agendas forward.

Mary Simon - Kanadas erste indigene “Vizekönigin“

Am 26. Juli 2021 beginnt eine neue Ära in der jüngeren Geschichte Kanadas. Mit der 74-jährigen Mary Jeannie May Simon tritt erstmals in der seit 154 Jahre bestehenden Konföderation Kanadas eine Angehörige eines indigenen Volkes das Amt der Generalgouverneurin an. Damit ist sie die 30. Inhaberin dieses Amtes seit 1867 und verfassungsrechtlich Repräsentantin des offiziellen Staatsoberhaupts Kanadas, Königin Elizabeth II. Der kanadische Regierungschef Justin Trudeau hatte am 6. Juli bekannt gegeben, dass die Queen Simon auf seinen Vorschlag in ihr neues Amt berufen habe.
