Abschluss des Aussöhnungsabkommen zwischen Namibia und Deutschland in Sicht?

Der lange Weg der Aussöhnung

Die Republik Namibia und die Bundesrepublik Deutschland haben sich nach mehrjährigen Verhandlungen auf ein Abkommen zur Wiedergutmachung über das begangene Unrecht während der deutschen Kolonialzeit verständigt. Das meldete die Deutsche Presse Agentur (dpa) in der vergangenen Woche1. Ein Entwurf für ein Abkommen werde nun beiden Regierungen zur Abnahme vorgelegt. Bis das geschehen ist, haben beide Seiten Stillschweigen über die Details des Abkommens vereinbart. Gegenstand der Verhandlungen ist die Aufarbeitung von Gewaltakten gegenüber den Volksstämmen der Nama und Herero im damaligen „Deutsch-Südwestafrika“ in den Jahren 1904-1908. Im Jahre 2015 ist die namibische Seite mit einem Forderungskatalog an die Bundesregierung herangetreten und verlangt seitdem Reparationsforderungen verbunden mit einer offiziellen Entschuldigung sowie die juristische Titulierung des Verbrechens als „Genozid.“

Der Sondergipfel des Europäischen Rates, der - anders als der letzte reguläre Gipfel der Staats- und Regierungschefs - in Präsenzform in Brüssel stattfand, beschäftigte sich wie im Vorfeld geplant mit den Themenschwerpunkten COVID-19, Klimawandel und außenpolitischen Fragen. Letzterer Themenkomplex gewann am Tag vor dem Zusammentreffen der EU-Spitzen jedoch signifikant an Bedeutung, als die belarussischen Behörden ein Passagierflugzeug auf einem innereuropäischen Flug unter dem Vorwand einer Bombendrohung zur Landung zwangen, um einen Regimekritiker und seine Lebensgefährtin festzunehmen. In seltener Einigkeit verurteilte der Europäische Rat sowohl die erzwungene Landung als auch die Festnahme des Oppositionellen und kündigte weitere Sanktionen gegen Belarus an. Mit Blick auf die Entwicklung der Pandemie sowie die gemeinsamen Klimaziele der Union herrschte Zuversicht, dass in den kommenden Wochen und Monaten weitere Ziele erreicht werden können.

The presidency in Syria has already been decided

On Wednesday, May 26th 2021, presidential elections will be held in Syria, the winner has already been determined: incumbent Bashar al-Assad. The elections are undemocratic, more than half of the Syrian population and opposition candidates are excluded from voting, while political repression and the electoral law obstruct any real alternatives. Assad’s reelection is likely to impede a political transition process for another seven years at least.
