Chile liefert am Superwahlwochenende 15./16. Mai einen eindrucksvollen Beweis seiner demokratischen Reife. Nach teils turbulenten Monaten seit dem Beginn sozialer Unruhen im Oktober 2019 und nun unter den erschwerten Bedingungen der Pandemie mit nach wie vor über 37.000 aktiven Covid-Fällen folgten knapp sechs Millionen Chilenen (ca. 40 Prozent) dem Aufruf, ihre Stimme an den Urnen zur Wahl der Mitglieder der verfassungsgebenden Versammlung sowie ihrer kommunalen und regionalen Vertreter abzugeben. Damit liegt die Wahlbeteiligung deutlich unter den 7,5 Millionen abgegebenen Stimmen des Plebiszits vom 25. Oktober des vergangenen Jahres.

Die Regierung Bolsonaro unter Druck – Wiederwahl in Gefahr?

Seit Ende April beschäftigt sich ein Untersuchungsausschuss im brasilianischen Senat mit der Frage, ob Brasiliens Staatspräsident Jair Bolsonaro und seine Regierung für Versäumnisse etwa bei der Impfstoffbeschaffung sowie für generelles Fehlverhalten und Unregelmäßigkeiten im Umgang mit der Pandemie Verantwortung tragen. Zahlreiche Beobachter gehen davon aus, dass die Regierung durch Fehlentscheidungen und fahrlässiges Handeln eine Mitschuld an den etwa 430.000 brasilianischen Corona-Toten hat. So könnten auch Bolsonaros Chancen auf eine zweite Amtszeit sinken, wenn diese Schuld nachgewiesen wird.
