Am 28. Oktober 2020 werden in Tansania Präsidentschaft- und Parlamentswahlen abgehalten. Obwohl freie und faire Wahlen ohnehin kaum zu erwarten waren, zeigt sich im Jahr 2020 doch einmal mehr besonders drastisch, dass sich Tansania unter Präsident Magufuli immer weiter weg von einer Demokratie entwickelt hat. Nach Einschätzung der meisten Beobachter steht das Ergebnis längst fest und wird nicht durch die freie Stimmabgabe der Wähler entschieden. Die Entwicklungen der letzten Wochen verdeutlichen, mit welcher Strategie die amtierende Regierung den Machterhalt sichern will. Die Behinderungen schon vor dem eigentlichen Wahltag sind dabei ein wichtiger Faktor.

Historischer Wahltag in Chile

Deutliche Mehrheit der Chilenen entscheidet sich für eine neue Verfassung

In einem historischen Wahlprozess hat sich eine Mehrheit von 78,27 zu 21,73 Prozent der an der Wahl beteiligten Chilenen am 25. Oktober für die Ausarbeitung einer neuen Verfassung entschieden. Unter dem Motto „Stimme ab und wähle das Land, das Du möchtest“ („Vota y elige el país que quieres“) waren rund 14 Millionen Chilenen ab dem 18. Lebensjahr aufgerufen, von ihrem Stimmrecht Gebrauch zu machen. Ein Jahr nach dem Beginn sozialer Unruhen am 18. Oktober 2019, die die Andenrepublik in ihren Grundfesten erschütterten, erwartet die Politik mit der Abstimmung das Land langfristig zu befrieden. Millionen von Chilenen erhoffen von der Ausarbeitung einer neuen Verfassung, sich endgültig vom langen Schatten der Militärdiktatur Augusto Pinochets befreien und die strukturelle soziale Ungleichheit beseitigen zu können. Mit knapp über 50 Prozent Wahlbeteiligung blieb die Teilnahme an der Wahl jedoch deutlich unter den Erwartungen und konnte nur geringfügig den Trend rückläufiger Wahlbeteiligungen seit der Aufhebung der obligatorischen Wahlpflicht vor neun Jahren durchbrechen.

The outcome of this year’s run-off election confirmed the election result of the first round of voting

The outcome of this year’s run-off election confirmed the election result of the first round of voting. While in the last election the seemingly clear-cut victory was lost during the 2nd round of voting, it was mostly representatives from the centre-right parties who prevailed in this election, even in the run-off. As a result, Lithuania will have a new government headed by Ingrida Šimonytė. The run-off election took place in 68 constituencies and only three candidates won their constituency during the first round of voting, including Šimonytė. In the run-off election, the party of the prospective future Prime Minister was successful in 26 constituencies. With a total of 74 representatives from parties of a potentially centre-right coalition versus 67 of the then opposition parties, there are great prospects for a successful term of office.

Keen observers of Arctic news headlines must have recently been amazed by the European Union edging again towards the Arctic stage. Despite our world being stymied by a sub-microscopic infectious agent, headlines on the future of the EU’s Arctic policy become more frequent–albeit starting from a rather low level of frequency. This brief takes advantage of an emerging EU-Arctic momentum and the future of the EU’s Arctic engagement by re-considering the EU’s Arctic status quo, the geopolitical realities of a new Arctic policy and the distinct role of the European Parliament in this policy-making process.

Der überwältigende Wahlsieg des MAS, der am 18. Oktober gut 55% der Stimmen erhielt, ist nicht nur eine Ohrfeige für die Opposition, sondern auch Ergebnis einer Suche nach Stabilität. Wahlumfragen hatten den Ex-Präsidenten Carlos Mesa vorne gesehen, doch an der Urne entschieden sich die Wähler in einem Klima tiefer Unsicherheit für den ehemaligen Wirtschaftsminister Luis Arce, der für viele die guten Jahre des Rohstoffbooms repräsentiert.
