Kampala's Air Quality is Red-Flagged

Awareness of the "Silent Killer" Remains Low

Today, polluted air is the greatest environmental risk to health around the entire world. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that 7 million people annually die as a result of living with polluted air. In 2019, Uganda scored third on the African continent for recording the highest and most dangerously polluted air – only Ghana and DR Congo produced worse results. In global comparison, Uganda ranks among the top 25 of countries with the highest amount of Particulate Matter (PM), an airborne contaminant which negatively affects human health. Escaping these microscopic pollutants is virtually impossible, especially in the capital city Kampala.

The Italian Economy: a Tale of Bumblebee and Butterflies

Prof. Paolo Garonna, Universität LUISS G. Carli, Rom

Its flight is clumsy, heavy, uncertain and noisy. But it flies! Defying the laws of aerodynamics. This is the bumble- bee – and the Italian economy. In the time of the pandemic, its strengths and weaknesses have appeared patently (pandemics are excellent at this), and inextricably intertwined.

Krisencocktail in Kolumbien

COVID-19 stürzt venezolanische Migranten in ausweglose Lage

CHINA AFTER COVID-19: NAVIGATING BETWEEN GREAT POWER RIVALRY AND INTERNATIONAL STABILITY

Contribution to the series "The World HandCOV'd"

When China marked the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic in October 2019, the role of the United States in the international arena had been thoroughly reshuffled by the presidency of Donald Trump. His open contempt of multilateral institutions and policies driven by narrow interests had left allies doubting if they could rely on US support in the event of a crisis. At the same time, China has become particularly active in defining its role in the world since President and Party Chairman Xi Jinping took over leadership in 2012. He shifted China’s ambitions into a higher gear by announcing that China must “take centre stage in the world.”
