Being considered for: An international economics or foreign policy post, perhaps at the Treasury Department, the Agency for International Development or the White House. He is already a member of Mr. Obama’s transition advisory council, and while family issues may prevent him from taking an immediate role, he would most likely remain an outside adviser to the president-elect. (considered)

Would bring to the job: Expertise in emerging markets, sustainable development and alternative energy, as a lawyer, an economic policy wonk and a manager.

Is linked to Mr. Obama by: Late nights and long meetings at The Harvard Law Review. After graduation, the two lost touch, until Mr. Froman heard that Mr. Obama was running for the Senate and offered assistance. A prodigious fund-raiser, especially among New York’s young finance crowd, Mr. Froman introduced Mr. Obama to Robert E. Rubin, the former Treasury secretary, who has become a key adviser.

In his own words: “Creating sustainable economic growth and increasing standards of living cannot solve the region’s political and ethnic problems. But they can contribute to stability in the region and create incentives to avoid conflict.” (From a 2000 Council on Foreign Relations report on the Balkans.)

Used to work for: Mr. Rubin, like a growing number of potential Obama appointees. In the early Clinton years, Mr. Froman worked for the National Economic Council, the National Security Council and then the Treasury Department, where he focused on United States economic policy toward the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe. In 1997, he became Mr. Rubin’s chief of staff at the Treasury Department, eventually following him to Citigroup. Now a managing director there, Mr. Froman specializes in investments in infrastructure and sustainable development.

Carries as baggage: As a high-ranking Citigroup official, Mr. Froman is one of many potential appointees with ties to the current troubles on Wall Street.

Biography includes: Born Aug. 20, 1962. ... graduated from Princeton, earned a doctorate in international relations from Oxford and a law degree from Harvard. ... after law school, Mr. Froman and his wife, Nancy Goodman, moved to Albania, where they ran a legal reform initiative sponsored by the American Bar Association.
