Voluntary Party Quotas: Japan’s Status Quo and Lessons from Germany

Japan has a long lack of female lawmakers. According to the gender gap report released by the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) in June, Japan’s ranking was the lowest ever, 125th out of 146 countries, especially in the political field, where it ranked 138th. In fact, if we look at the percentage of women in parliament: in the first postwar 1946 general election, the ratio of women in the House of Representatives (HR) was 8.4%, and in the most recent 2021 general election, it stood at 9.7%. There has been virtually no increase for around 70 years. Even in the most recent national election, the 2022 House of Councillors election, the ratio of women elected stood at 25.8%.

What's behind Lula's efforts to build international alliances to protect rainforests?

With the Amazon Summit, an international summit for the protection of the rainforest took place in August 2023 in Belém, Brazil, with high-ranking participants from the Amazon riparian states. It was agreed to improve cooperation on topics such as water management, infrastructure, health, human rights and biodiversity protection, however, it was not possible to agree on concrete goals. Moreover, a new economic program presented by President Lula shortly after the summit raises the question as to where Brazil's environmental policy is actually heading.

Tanzania´s global economic diplomacy: Evaluating international partnerships for prosperity

Roundtable meeting in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania

On 27 July 2023, the Chatham House Africa Programme and the Konrad Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Tanzania office convened a private roundtable meeting in Dar es Salaam. The discussion focused on the priorities for Tanzania’s engagement on the international stage, including the effectiveness of global partnerships for trade, investment and infrastructure development, and the country’s agency in responding to shared challenges such as climate change. The roundtable marked the third event in a project partnership series between KAS and Chatham House on Tanzania’s Foreign Policy Agenda: Economic Diplomacy and International Agency. The series aims to encourage informed dialogue and debate at an important moment for Tanzania’s external engagements: the country’s main foreign relations strategy document, the ‘New Foreign Policy’, was adopted in 2001, but an official review has been commissioned by President Samia Suluhu Hassan and is to take place in 2023. The first event under this collaboration, a webinar on Tanzanian agency in the international system, 1 was held in November 2022; and a roundtable event in Arusha, focused on regional foreign policy, was held in May 2023. 2 This Dar es Salaam roundtable meeting was held under the Chatham House Rule. 3 The following document summarizes the key findings and themes of the discussion.

Long-term challenges for the Russian Federation

This country report explores the demographic policies of Russia in the context of the war in Ukraine. It traces Russia's demographic changes over the past century, from the Tsarist era to the present Russian Federation, and discusses the various measures the government has taken to address the demographic challenges, especially the declining birth rate. The conflict with Ukraine has introduced additional challenges, including the loss of life and mass migrations. While government initiatives have shown some positive results, the demographic situation remains complex and precarious, with regional disparities, urbanization, and external factors influencing the population dynamics.
