Aus den Europawahlen vom 23. bis 26. Mai 2019 geht ein heterogeneres Parlament hervor, in dem jedoch proeuropäische Parteien der Mitte weiterhin über eine große Mehrheit verfügen. Europagegner machen in einigen Mitgliedstaaten teils deutliche Fortschritte, können ihre Position aber global betrachtet nicht nennenswert stärken. Erstmals in der Geschichte der Wahlen zum Europäischen Parlament steigt die Wahlbeteiligung.

KAS-Ratsbericht - Personalentscheidungen auf Ratsgipfel im Juni verschoben

Nur 48 Stunden nach dem Abschluss der Wahlen zum Europäischen Parlament, und damit so früh wie selten zuvor, trafen sich die Staats- und Regierungschefs der EU-Mitgliedstaaten am 28. Mai 2019 in Brüssel zu einem informellen Abendessen, in dessen Rahmen der Ausgang der Europawahlen sowie die Besetzung der Posten des Präsidenten der Europäischen Kommission, des Europäischen Rates, des Europäischen Parlaments sowie des Hohen Vertreters für Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik diskutiert wurde. Sowohl innerhalb des Europäischen Rates als auch zwischen Rat und Europäischem Parlament besteht weiterhin Uneinigkeit über die europäischen Personalfragen, die nun bis zum nächsten Ratsgipfel am 20./21. Juni 2019 vorbereitet werden sollen.

Bei den Lokalwahlen am 2. Juni 2019 in sechs Bundesstaaten Mexikos musste die Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) wie erwartet starke Einbußen hinnehmen. Die Movimiento de Regeneración Nacional (MORENA) des Präsidenten Andrés Manuel López Obrador gewann zwei Gouverneursposten hinzu und ist in zwei Bundesstaaten in der Breite erstarkt. Die vormals dominierende Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) verlor weiter an Boden. Die Wahlbeteiligung in den Bundesstaaten war mit 22 bis 45 Prozent auf historisch tiefem Niveau.

The Deal of the Century and Jordan's Dilemma

In this article Suha Maayeh explains Jordan's dilemma when it comes to the "Deal of the Century". Trump’s "Deal of the Century" is supposed to end the decade long Israeli-Palestinian conflict by suggesting the final borders of Israel, Israeli-Palestinian political relations, the status of Jerusalem and the future of 5.4 million Palestinian refugees. Although the content of the deal has not yet been revealed, Palestinians fear that it would end their hope for an independent Palestinian state in the 1967 borders in the framework of a two-state-solution. While Saudi-Arabia and the United Arab Emirates seem to be supporting the deal, Jordan – a major US ally in the Middle East and the state with the longest Arab-Israeli border – feels it has been left out of consultations by the American side and it has voiced its disapproval of any deal that would not realize the two-state solution. With a Palestinian-majority population, Jordan, which is, however, a major recipient of US aid, will face a serious dilemma if the "Deal of the Century" will follow along the above mentioned lines.

The 72nd World Health Assembly (WHA) took place from May 20th to 28th, 2019 in Geneva against the background of diverse developments: on the one hand, positive developments in Universal Health Cov-erage and in fighting against diseases like malaria, on the other hand, the smoldering Ebola crisis in the DR Congo is a matter of concern. In addition, there were a number of controversial debates, among others on the resolution on the transparency of prices for medical and health products. Some (geo) political conflicts cast their shadows on the discussions during the WHA.
