EXPERTS ROUNDTABLE REPORT

ADVANCING CLIMATE ACTION FOR COP28 AND TANZANIA’S NDC COMMITMENTS

The expert’s roundtable discussion on COP28 and Tanzania’s NDCs was held on 1st June, 2023, at Protea Hotel Oysterbay in Tanzania. The objective of the discussion was to engage pre-COP28 stakeholders, academia, policy makers, and climate experts in a collective effort to raise awareness, foster accountability, and drive action on climate change. The discussion aimed to understanding international and national climate action processes, the outcome of COP27, evaluate the status of Tanzania’s NDCs and identify practical solutions for effective implementation and plans towards COP28. The major theme of the discussion was how to keep the 1.5°C goal alive and how to strengthen adaptation and mitigation actions, including loss and damage. The alarming projections of global warming and greenhouse gas emissions reaching catastrophic levels underscore the urgency to address the climate crisis now.

The Namibian Constitution

A Comprehensive Guide

This work on the Constitution of Namibia is addressed to people in Namibia, researchers, students, members of the general public, but also to readers outside the country with an interest in Namibian politics and the legal order of the country. Meeting the expectations of readers from Namibia but also from the interested public at large is difficult. For Namibians matters may be of interest which people in other countries will not find important at all. For people in Europe or elsewhere, explanations may be called for, which the Namibian reader may find more than redundant. The authors, who have experienced this methodological dilemma living on both sides of the fence, tried to find a compromising way through the dilemma.

Voluntary Party Quotas: Japan’s Status Quo and Lessons from Germany

Japan has a long lack of female lawmakers. According to the gender gap report released by the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) in June, Japan’s ranking was the lowest ever, 125th out of 146 countries, especially in the political field, where it ranked 138th. In fact, if we look at the percentage of women in parliament: in the first postwar 1946 general election, the ratio of women in the House of Representatives (HR) was 8.4%, and in the most recent 2021 general election, it stood at 9.7%. There has been virtually no increase for around 70 years. Even in the most recent national election, the 2022 House of Councillors election, the ratio of women elected stood at 25.8%.

What's behind Lula's efforts to build international alliances to protect rainforests?

With the Amazon Summit, an international summit for the protection of the rainforest took place in August 2023 in Belém, Brazil, with high-ranking participants from the Amazon riparian states. It was agreed to improve cooperation on topics such as water management, infrastructure, health, human rights and biodiversity protection, however, it was not possible to agree on concrete goals. Moreover, a new economic program presented by President Lula shortly after the summit raises the question as to where Brazil's environmental policy is actually heading.
