Youth4Policy Migration Fellowship

Introduction to Migration and Forced Displacement.

Youth4Policy is an initiative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung aimed at empowering the next generation of policy experts to meaningfully contribute to policy analysis and public debates. Youth4Policy serves as a capacity development lab for youth leaders from a diverse spectrum of backgrounds such as academia, civil society, and public service with a motivation to research and analyze specific policy questions from a youth perspective. Particularly for the next five years, the fellowship program shall attract young researchers who are interested to study and explore pertinent policy questions around migration and forced displacement issues in Uganda and South Sudan.

An Innovation Fireplace that brought together Ugandan startups and German politicians

Ugandan Startup Ecosystem

On 14th of June, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), together with Media Challenge Initiative (MCI), hosted the Innovation Fireplace: A Panel discussion and exhibition of the Ugandan Startup Ecosystem at MCI Media Hub. More than 30 startup innovators met with a delegation of German Members of Parliament to discuss startup investment, political economy, ease of doing business and to showcase their innovations. The discussion focused on the prospects of Uganda's younger generation for investment and innovation to promote entrepreneurship and employment. Afterwards, the German delegates visited the various exhibition booths and talked to leading young innovators.

Interactive Exhibition

Games and Politics is a touring exhibition by Goethe Institut that has been travelling around the globe, last stop was Addis Ababa in Ethopia. This year’s edition is being hosted in Kampala (March - May) in collaboration with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Uganda and South Sudan and the Design Hub Kampala. It is based on the exhibition Global Games by the ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medien) in Karlsruhe, Germany, and focuses explicitly on political games created since 2004.

Capacity Building for a Growing CSO Network

GAIN-Uganda Member Organisations Participate in Workshop

The political environment in Uganda and strategic alliance building were just two of the issues that were discussed at the capacity building workshop for member organisations (MOs) of the Governance and Accountability Inter-District CSO Network Uganda (GAIN-Uganda). The workshop took place from 1st to 4th of July 2015 and brought together one representative of each MO.

KAS engages Private Sector Players in discussion of attaining Inclusive Growth in Uganda

Conference Hosted in Conjunction with Private Sector Foundation-Uganda & Uganda Small Scale Industries Association-USSIA

The role of private sector players in engendering inclusive economic and social growth was at the center of the just concluded conference hosted by KAS in conjunction with Private Sector Foundation Uganda-PSFU, and Uganda Small Scale Industries Association-USSIA. The conference hosted at Protea Hotel on June 30th 2015 in Kampala included high level speakers such as the Minister of Trade Industry and Cooperatives Hon. Amelia Kyambadde, the Chairman of PSFU Mr. Patrick Bitature and 170 other participants.

Youth Discuss Peaceful, Free, and Fair Elections

2nd National Youth Conference Held at Makerere University

More than half of Uganda's population of voting age will be under 30 in the 2016 general elections. However, young people are not fully integrated in the democratic processes of the country and already today there are worrying trends that indicate that some degree of election violence seem likely in 2016. In light of these developments, KAS in cooperation with UNIFOG, CCG, and UYONET implemented a conference which brought together over 100 young people from all over the country and focused on the theme “2016 and beyond; Young people for a peaceful and credible election experience”.

Ugandan Political Delegation Visiting Berlin

Following an invitation of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the "Stiftung für Grundwerte und Völkerverständigung", a group of political representatives from Uganda visited Berlin from 10 to 13 June. The 10 delegates wer led by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Jacob Oulanyah. Among others, the delegation included the chairman of the parliamentary Human Rights Committee, the speaker of the Ugandan delegates within the East African Legislative Assembly, and several Members of Parliament and advisors from different ministries.

Capacity Building as Preparations for the 2016 General Elections

(Aspiring) Female Politicians in Apac District Trained

From 19th to 21st May 2015, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and Action for Development (ACFODE) implemented the second workshop in a series of workshops which aim at preparing aspiring women leaders and women who are already in elected office but are going to aim for higher offices for the 2016 general elections. By capacitating and empowering the participants, ACFODE and KAS hope to motivate more women to run, as well as to enable them to effectively and efficiently campaign for themselves.

Stakeholders Meeting in Discussion of Pension Sector Reforms

Rethinking Pension Sector Reforms as a Means of Strengthening Social Security Sector Frameworks in Uganda

On May 7th 2015, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Uganda and South Sudan convened a high level stakeholders meeting to discuss the reforms being proposed in the pension sector in Uganda with the goal of contributing to strengthening social security frameworks in the country. The round table meeting was convened in line with KAS efforts of promoting the concept of Social Market Economy around the world. The Social Market Economy idea considers balancing economic growth and the preservation of individual and market freedoms with social justice.

Workshop with Local Youth Council Leaders on Youth Participation – Northern Region

Strengthening Youth Structures in the Northern Region for Effectiveness and Election Preparedness

From April 15th until April 17th, Youth Councilors and Youth Council Leaders of 16 northern Districts of Uganda participated in a training in Gulu held by the National Youth Council (NYC) and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). Focus of the training was to build the capacity of the local youth structures to better coordinate their work and lead young people at the district level, as well as specifically address the topic of the upcoming elections 2016 and how young people in the north can be most effectively prepared for and involved in the election process.

First KAS Scholarship Holders Training 2015

Local Governance: Interrogating the Ugandan Model and Exploring Alternatives

The first annual scholarship holders training of 2015 took place on Tuesday, 28th April, at the Grand Global Hotel Kampala. The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) invited its scholars, which are studying in the field of Democracy and Development Studies, and Local Governance and Human Rights at the Uganda Martyr’s University, to a workshop on “Local Governance: Interrogating the Ugandan model and exploring alternatives”. This meeting was also considered as an informative get-together to foster the development of a strong alumni network.

Campaigning Training for Women

30 Female Councilors Trained in Kiboga District

The workshop in Kiboga, which took place from 14 to 16 of April, is the first of a series of workshops which focus on equipping aspiring leaders with skills and information on their mandate and as such support them to design their campaigns along achievable outcomes in relation to their mandate as women’s representatives and female political leaders.

After the first workshop of the year, where the “Young Leaders Think Tank for Policy Alternatives” set the frame for the upcoming work, they met again on Saturday, 25th April 2015 at Salama Shield Foundation. During this follow-up meeting, the participants concretized the planning process as well as reviewed the progress so far attained by the groups.
