Die Unzufriedenheit der kanadischen Bevölkerung mit ihrer Regierungspartei und deren Vorsitzenden hat neue Tiefen erreicht. Ein Ende der seit 15 Monaten andauernden Talfahrt der Liberalen scheint nicht in Sicht. Die Popularität sowohl der Partei als auch des Premierministers Justin Trudeau ist kontinuierlich gesunken, und die jüngsten Ergebnisse von Meinungsumfragen der führenden kanadischen Institute sind nicht dazu geeignet, die besorgte Basis der Liberalen zu beruhigen. Parallel sonnen sich die Konservativen (CPC) unter ihrem charismatischen Vorsitzenden Pierre Poilievre unter Umfrageergebnissen, die gegenwärtig sogar eine Mehrheitsregierung der seit 2015 in der Opposition verharrenden Partei für möglich erscheinen lassen.

Am 23. August wurde in Simbabwe gewählt. Emmerson Mnangagwa wurde zum Sieger erklärt und für seine zweite Amtszeit als Präsident vereidigt. Laut Verfassung darf der 80-Jährige bei der nächsten Wahl somit nicht mehr kandidieren. Nachdem Parlament und Kabinett nun ihre Arbeit aufgenommen haben, lassen sich einige Schlussfolgerungen für den Weg Simbabwes in den nächsten fünf Jahren ziehen: Der höchst umstrittene Wahlsieg hat die Hoffnung auf ein Ende der diplomatischen Isolation des Landes enttäuscht. Die Kontinuität in strategischen Kabinettsposten lässt keine Verbesserung der stagnierenden Wirtschaftslage erwarten. Und um ihren leichten Aufschwung zu festigen, müsste die Opposition das Parlament zu einem Ort der politischen Debatte über Korruption und Reformen machen.

In that context, a 3-phase-research on “the EU Approach to Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific: from Strategy to Practice” has been conducted by USSH Hanoi with sponsorship from KAS Vietnam. Its aim is to learn about the European Union’s approach to cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region and impacts on regional countries.
