Public Symposium "East-Africa's Rising Middle Class: Challenges and Opportunities"
Uganda's middle class is growing but requisite economic opportunities must be created to match this growth. Together with Goethe-Zentrum Kampala UGCS, we will organise a pubic symposium at Makerere University on the 16th of August to discuss the challenges and opportunities of a rising middle class. Besides awarding the winners of a Photo Contest – presenting lived realities of Kampala’s Middle Class – we are looking forward to a lively symposium discussing East-African perspectives on the Middle Class with the following panellists: Milton Ayoki (UG), Yamara-Monika Wessling (DE) and James Muriuki (KE).

One of the key strategies used is Women Caucuses. ACFODE and KAS will conduct a follow-up of the women caucus in Kabale District.

The Young Leaders Think Tank for Policy Alternatives which was initiated by KAS in February 2011 has held its first public dialogue. The Think Tank presented a paper on the topic of youth unemployment which outlines policy recommendations from the perspective of the young generation. The paper was discussed by a panel of politicians, scientists and entrepreneurs.

Civil society, political party activists and local government leaders in Mbale district emphasised the need to continue a dialogue on issues of democracy and development. This consensus was reached during dialogue at Masaba Hilltop hotel facilitated by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, July 21, 2011.

Social Market Economy as an Alternative Approach to Poverty Reduction?
At a public dialogue organised by Makerere University Convocation (MUC) and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) leading representatives from the academic as well as the political sphere discussed whether the concept of Social Market Economy could represent an alternative approach to ensure inclusive growth and poverty reduction in Uganda. They largely agreed that a mixture of free market and the creation of a social balance through state intervention in cases of market failure is the way forward.
