50 years of Germany in the UN

The world in transition – Uniting for Peace?

A look at the past 50 years shows that Germany can successfully set a course: as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, through its membership in the Human Rights Council as well as in other UN bodies. The Namibia Initiative, the mediation between Iran and Iraq in the 1980s, participation in peace and stabilization missions, advocacy for the International Criminal Court or support for a special Ukraine-Tribunal, are all important steps to make the future on this planet safer, more peaceful, and sustainable.

They know what they are doing

Prostitution and the Nordic model from the point of view of the clients

Prostitution is one of the most controversial topics in society and politics, which is also reflected in the various legal regulations within and outside Europe. While prostitution is legal and regulated by law in Germany, in other countries it is completely prohibited or is in a legal gray area. The so-called Nordic Model is another way and consists, among other things, of the complete decriminalization of prostituted persons with simultaneous criminalization of all profiteers including the demand, i.e. the clients. This article deals with the experiences of clients in the German prostitution milieu, what they know about coercion and violence within prostitution, and whether they should be criminalized in Germany.

Die Alternative für Deutschland 

On its environment, ideology and how it understands politics

Since its founding in 2013, the Alternative for Germany has undergone a transformation in its programmatic and strategic orientation. From the outset, a pronounced "anti-establishment attitude" was a unifying factor. Today, this is complemented by a positioning in the party system that is driven, in particular, by the AfD's forefront – the extreme New Right with its "friend-or-foe" thinking. This makes the party part of a milieu that relies on "cultural hegemony from the right" – a hegemony of ethnocultural unity, among other things. The party's positions in the fields of democracy, the concept of the people, and the image of history correspond with this thinking. This text presents strategies and ideologems in the milieu of the AfD as well as the AfD itself, its program and understanding of politics.

A public dialogue on reproductive medicine

Discussion paper and evaluation of an open internet forum: What is expected from reproductive medicine? How are the opportunities and risks to be assessed?

 The German Embryo Protection Act is over 30 years old. In view of medical progress and social change, it can no longer regulate many issues satisfactorily. For this reason, politicians and experts are considering modern legislation on reproductive medicine. In an internet forum open to all, Leopoldina and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung have put the chances and risks of reproductive medicine up for discussion. The aim was to bring the debate to a broader societal public.

Eine entscheidende Rolle könnte eine bessere Personalpolitik der Hochschulen und außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen spielen, die die Leistungsfähigkeit der jeweiligen Forschenden in den Blick nimmt, sie offen und ehrlich berät, und sie entsprechend unterstützt und fördert.

Generation is less than Age

Representative surveys on age differences in voting behaviour, values, anxieties and political participation

Results of German federal elections differ considerably between the young and the elderly. Considering reports on supposed major differences between Booms, GenZ and other generations this may seem obvious. However, how real are the differences supposed to result from experiences and circumstances during adolescence? Based on representative surveys the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung researched these questions in detail. The answer in short: There are not generation differences.

The idea is that young adults, after completing their schooling, would be required to spend a year serving society in an area of their free choice, i.e. in a social, cultural, ecological or charitable institution or, alternatively, in the German armed forces. What do young people themselves think about service to society and how should it be structured in the future?

The world's most populous country

Blessing or curse?

According to the latest UN report entitled "8 Billion People, Infinite opportunities", which was published in April 2023, India is now the most most populous country in the world. It has surpassed its geopolitical rival China, whose population in 2022 declined for the first time in six decades, with a birth rate of only 1.24 children per woman. The average Indian is now is now about 10 years younger than his Chinese counterpart. But what are the consequences and implications of India's population increase? Are these effects bound to national borders or do they have international implications? Can we speak of a demographic dividend or rather of a demographic crisis? And what impact does the demographic trend have on the country's rapid economic growth?

In der Reihe „Forschungen und Quellen zur Zeitgeschichte“ veröffentlicht das Archiv für Christlich-Demokratische Politik seit 1980 wissenschaftliche Studien zur Christlichen Demokratie, Darstellungen zur Geschichte der Bundesrepublik und der CDU sowie Biographien wichtiger Repräsentanten. Zu den 50 bisher erschienen Büchern zählen auch Quelleneditionen, wie Protokolle von Parteigremien oder Tagebücher von einflussreichen Politikern. Die Publikationen sind im Buchhandel erhältlich.

Sociopolitical Series

Veröffentlicht wurden herausragende Dissertationsschriften mit gesellschaftspolitisch relevanten Themen von Stipendiatinnen und Stipendiaten der Begabtenförderung und Personen, die ihrem Promotionskolleg „Soziale Marktwirtschaft“ kooptiert sind.
