Radical climate activism

Representative survey on the prevalence of radical attitudes on the issue of climate protection

This study explores the question of how high the acceptance of non-peaceful means in the fight for climate protection is among the population. How to write multilateralism again?

On the question of purchase guarantees and WTO rules

German and European producers are supposed to receive purchase guarantees by the German government in order to boost the development of renewable energies. Nevertheless, this practice violates World Trade Organization rules. However, there are alternatives such as tenders that allow for qualitative aspects. This article discusses the implications of these proposals and notes that deliberate violation of multilateral trade rules is troubling, especially as the importance of such rules in other areas is emphasized.

Analysis of the rerun election for the Berlin House of Representatives on 12 February 2023

Report on the preliminary final result, the main voting determinants, voter migration and social structure.

The CDU wins the election with a large distance to the other parties. It gains 10.2 percentage points compared to the 2021 election and achieves 28.2 percent of the second votes. The parties of the governing coalition of SPD, Greens and Left lose. The SPD has its historically lowest result in Berlin for the third time in a row. The FDP fails to clear the five-percent hurdle. Compared to other federal states, the election is characterized by particularly low degrees of satisfaction at all levels.

Bias in journalism – the more equal the better?

Media bias: The journalistic profession is homogeneously occupied; is this noticeable in the end product or in the audience's perception?

A significant part of the political spectrum in the population does not see itself represented in professional journalism; this can lead consumers to so-called "alternative media" and polarising providers. Journalistic newsrooms therefore need more diversity of perspective, not only on gender and origin, but also on different (political) worldviews.

Energy Mix in Germany

Gas and nuclear energy accepted as a temporary solution

Due to developments in the energy market, the question of what energy mix Germans prefer until energy demand can be met by renewable energy is being raised again. The hierarchy is clear. Half of the Germans consider gas suitable for intermediate use. In the case of nuclear energy, 44% advocate its use until renewable energies can cover energy demand. Coal, on the other hand, is considered suitable for intermediate use by only a minority. 25% believe that coal should be used more or equally in the future.

New engine for a new era?

Why, in 2023, a new approach to Franco-German cooperation is needed in Europe

“The Franco-German engine is indispensable for Europe“. This image is bound to reappear 60 years after Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer signed the Élysée Treaty. In 1963, the two heads of state paved the way for European reconciliation, peace and prosperity in a European Community of six founding member states. KAS

Bundeswehr of the Future

Responsibility and Artificial Intelligence

The Russian war against Ukraine has brought the need for a Bundeswehr ready for operations to the public's attention. Besides a debate on equipment, there is also a need to address the digital transformation of the armed forces and the technological developments of the 21st century. In particular, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) interrogates the German armed forces and German society on the extent to which AI can and should be used militarily. What are the possibilities and limits? How should the autonomy of weapon systems be dealt with in the future, and what role do soldiers play in this?
