Strengthening the foundations of independent media regulation in Africa, 14-15 September 2026 | Johannesburg, South Africa

Representatives of media councils and independent media accountability bodies from across Africa will gather in Johannesburg for the NIMCA Inaugural Assembly & 2nd Annual General Meeting. The event will provide a platform for members to strengthen governance structures, discuss strategic priorities, promote sustainability, and advance collaboration in support of independent media regulation across the continent.

Supported by KAS Media Africa, the NIMCA Inaugural Assembly & 2nd Annual General Meeting will bring together media councils, independent media accountability bodies, partners, and stakeholders from across Africa in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 14-15 September 2026. Convened under the theme, "Strengthening the foundations of independent media regulation in Africa: Entrenching accountability, consolidating governance, sustainability and collective action," the Assembly will provide a platform for members to reflect on the organisation's progress, strengthen institutional governance, and chart a shared path forward for independent media regulation on the continent.

The gathering will feature strategic discussions on accountability, sustainability, continental cooperation, and emerging developments shaping the media landscape. Participants will exchange experiences, review key organisational matters, and identify priorities for strengthening media accountability systems across Africa. The Assembly will conclude with the adoption of resolutions and a communiqué outlining NIMCA's future priorities and commitments.
