Global Media Forum 2026- “Journalism Out Loud”

Since 2008, Deutsche Welle has brought together media professionals, policymakers, and experts from around the world through its annual Global Media Forum. This year’s conference took place on 23–24 June in Bonn, Germany, under the theme “Journalism Out Loud.”

The forum attracted more than 1,400 participants from over 110 countries, creating a unique platform for dialogue, exchange, and learning across sectors and regions. During the opening ceremony, the speakers emphasized that “Journalism Out Loud” is not about journalists raising their voices, but about ensuring that journalism continues to be heard in an increasingly complex and challenging information environment.

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Media Programme South East Europe participated in the conference and hosted a panel discussion titled “Talking to Each Other: Black Sea Security Experts and Journalists.” The panel brought together security experts and journalists from Bulgaria, Romania, and Germany to discuss the relationship between the media and the military in times of growing regional and global challenges.

Moderated by the Director of KAS SEE, the discussion highlighted a key takeaway: while the relationship between the military and the media is often complex, it remains indispensable. Open dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation are essential for ensuring informed public debate and effective security communication.

A highlight of the conference was the presentation of Deutsche Welle’s Freedom of Speech Award, which honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to defending freedom of expression and independent journalism. This year’s award was presented to Jimmy Lai, a prominent advocate for press freedom in Hong Kong. Since 2020, he has been held in solitary confinement on charges linked to his publishing work and his support for democratic freedoms and independent media. As Jimmy Lai was unable to attend the ceremony, the award was accepted on his behalf by his daughter, Claire Lai, who delivered a powerful reminder of the importance of defending press freedom worldwide.

The conference program covered a wide range of topics, with particular attention given to the growing role of artificial intelligence in journalism. Discussions focused on how AI can be responsibly integrated into journalistic work and the opportunities it offers for the media sector. At the same time, participants stressed that despite technological advances, quality journalism still depends on human judgment, critical thinking, and editorial responsibility.

The two-day conference concluded with a cruise on the Rhine River, providing participants with an opportunity to continue discussions, strengthen professional networks, and exchange ideas in a more informal setting.
