Global Resources and Sustainability

Asset Publisher

In the Global Resources and Sustainability department, we deal with the political framework conditions for a future-proof sustainability policy. Our focus is on protecting our natural resources, access to raw materials, and the importance of geostrategically relevant technologies for a sustainable economy. We combine global perspectives with concrete fields of action: from energy and raw materials policy to development cooperation, mobility, and technology to environmental and climate policy, global health, agriculture, and consumer protection.

Against this backdrop, we analyze global challenges, develop interdisciplinary solutions, and advise decision-makers in Germany, Europe, and around the world. Our goal is to anchor responsible development as a cross-cutting task and to provide concrete political impetus.

Our topics at a glance

We develop strategies for a secure, affordable, and sustainable energy supply. Our focus is on the technology-neutral expansion of renewable energies and resilient energy markets. The goal is a sustainable energy system that is ecologically viable, economically strong, secure in terms of supply, and geopolitically independent. This raises the question of access to raw materials and their sustainable use for Germany.

We focus on Germany's and Europe's development policy relations with countries in the Global South. Central areas of interest are economic development, poverty reduction, migration policy and the protection of global public goods within the framework of bilateral and multilateral partnerships. Our approach: Development policy is value-based assistance for self-help and an integral component of Germany’s foreign policy that combines development, foreign, security, and economic policy.

We focus on technologies with geostrategic significance for a sustainable economy and development. We also analyze global mobility trends and related policy issues.

We strengthen the international health architecture with a focus on pandemic prevention, climate change, and digitalization in healthcare. Germany and Europe should take responsibility as global health actors. Agriculture provides interfaces between human health and that of animals and the environment. We also see agriculture as a key area for food security and biodiversity.

We examine the interactions between climate, environmental, and sustainability policies. In doing so, we rely on innovative approaches to reconcile sustainability and competitiveness.

Sustainability is a core concern for the Konrad Adenauer Foundation. It is important to us that ecological change is economically viable and oriented toward people's real lives.

Topics

As already indicated above, as a department we deal with a range of topics dedicated to areas such as sustainability, energy, agriculture, health and development policy. Many of these topics play such an important role in the Konrad Adenauer Foundation's portfolio of work that they are bundled together and presented on special topic pages in which we play a key role.

Resources and Environment

The political, economic, and societal challenges of managing natural resources sustainably are at the heart of current environmental and resource policy debates. Central themes include ecological transformation, strengthening resilience to global, geopolitical crises, and exploring how innovation and good governance can shape a forward-looking environmental policy.

Energy and Climate Policy

Climate change, energy crises, and geopolitical tensions have pushed the issue of sustainable and secure energy supply to the forefront of political debate.  Decarbonization, energy security, and affordable prices are interconnected challenges that call for innovative technologies, effective policy frameworks, and international cooperation.

Agriculture

Agriculture makes an important contribution to global food security. Agriculture and climate change are closely interconnected – it is both a source of emissions and particularly affected by their impacts. The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung participates constructively in the debate on how climate, environmental and resource protection can be reconciled with competitive and resilient agriculture.

Development Policy

Development policy is an integral component of Germany’s strategic foreign engagement and must be closely aligned with its foreign, security, and economic policies. The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung therefore stands for an inclusive development policy that, on the one hand, takes into account German interests and geopolitical developments, and on the other hand, recognises the fight against extreme poverty and the creation of decent living conditions as essential responsibilities of a value-based development cooperation.

Global Health

Global health strengthens security, prosperity, and resilience. In addition to combating diseases, prevention, pandemic preparedness, and good living conditions are crucial. Technological innovations play a role, as do the protection of biodiversity, climate, and the environment. Germany supports the WHO as a central actor. The Konrad Adenauer Foundation views global health policy as a cross-cutting issue and considers it from various perspectives and in conjunction with other policy areas.
