Tag des Auslandsjournalismus 2026 – The Future of International Journalism

On 9–10 October 2026, the second edition of the Tag des Auslandsjournalismus (Foreign Correspondence Day) took place in Munich, Germany. Organised by journalists.network with the support of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Media Programme South East Europe, the conference brought together foreign correspondents, young journalists, editors, and media experts to discuss the growing challenges facing international journalism.

Held at the headquarters of the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the conference addressed some of the most pressing issues in foreign reporting, including shrinking editorial budgets, journalists' safety, and increasing restrictions on press freedom.

The KAS Media Programme South East Europe contributed to several discussions, with particular attention to the representation of Eastern Europe in international media, the role of foundations in supporting journalism, and the personal experiences of journalists from Southeast Europe.

Kristina Baxanova, Head of the International News Desk at Bulgarian broadcaster bTV, participated in the panel "The Forgotten World: Blind Spots in International Journalism". The discussion examined which regions and developments receive international media attention and which remain underrepresented. Baxanova highlighted the importance of giving South Eastern Europe greater visibility in Western media, stressing the need for more balanced and comprehensive international reporting.

Christoph Plate, Director of the KAS Media Programme South East Europe, took part in a discussion on the role of foundations in foreign reporting. Against the backdrop of growing financial pressures on newsrooms, the panel explored the importance of supporting international journalism and creating opportunities for journalists to report beyond national borders.

Another highlight was a panel dedicated to Why we tell stories, a publication released by the KAS Media Programme South East Europe in February 2026.  Three of the book's contributors — Andrey Vladov, a Bulgarian journalist based in the United Kingdom, Kristina Atovska from North Macedonia, and Getoarbe Mulliqi from Kosovo — shared their personal experiences and reflected on what inspired them to pursue careers in journalism. Their contributions offered perspectives on the realities of working in the profession and the determination required to continue telling important stories, even under difficult circumstances.

The conference provided platform for professional exchange and dialogue on the future of international reporting. Through its involvement, the KAS Media Programme South East Europe reinforced its commitment to supporting independent journalism in and promoting greater visibility for Southeast Europe.
