Hans-Gert Poettering was born on 15 September of 1945 in Bersenbrueck (Lower Saxony, Germany). He never knew his father who was killed in the final days of World War II. This personal tragedy was instrumental in shaping his political involvement and his career in European politics. Hans-Gert Poettering has two sons, Johannes and Benedict.
Studies of Law, Political Science and History at the Universities of Bonn and Geneva as well as at the Institut des Hautes Études Internationales in Geneva (1968-1973). The only Member of the European Parliament who has served continously since the first direct election in 1979 to present. President of the European Parliament (2007-2009), Chairman of the EPP-ED group in the European Parliament (1999-2007), before Vice-Chairman (1994-1999). President of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (Euromed, 2008-2009). Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs. Former Chairman of the subcommittee on security and disarmament of the European Parliament (1984-1994).
Since January 2010 Chairman of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. Member of the Federal Executive Committee and Board of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Germany (1999-2009), since July 2009 coopted into the Federal Executive Board. Member of the Executive Committee of the European People's Party (EPP) until 2009. Chairman of the CDU in the district of Osnabrueck since September 1990. Chairman of the Friends and Patrons of the Young Christian Democrats Osnabrueck-Emsland. Co-founder of the "European Charlemagne Youth Prize". President of the Union of Europe of Germany (1997-1999). Chairman of the Union of Europe of Lower Saxony (1981-1991; German branch of the Union of European Federalists). Speaker on European politics of the Young Christian Democrats of Lower Saxony (1976-1980).

Dr. Hans-Gert Poettering
