Denmark debates stricter regula-tions for asylum

Leading Social Democrats are questioning the right of asylum

Similar to Germany, the Danish debate about how to treat asylum seekers and the legitimacy of the right of asylum has intensified since the migration crisis’ peak. A proposal by the social democrats (Sozialdemokraterne) caught the public off guard and led to a fierce discussion drawing either support or outright con-demnation.

Finnish President gets re-elected to second term in a landslide victory

Since 1994 the President in Finland gets elected through direct vote by the people. Scoring 62.7% of the vote Sauli Niinistö is the first ever presidential candidate to get elected in the first round by securing an absolute majority straight away. The reasons for the president´s his high ap-proval ratings appear to symbolize shifts in Finnish politics.

During the Congress of Scientists in Minsk on December 12 and 13, 2017 the academic elite of the country adopted the draft strategy “Science and Technology: 2018 - 2040”. The Congress was attended by more than 2.000 delegates from Belarus and about 500 international guests from the leading foreign academies of sciences and scientific and research centres.

Forced marriage rather than strategic partnership


For about two years the Republic of Belarus has been increasingly searching for the improved political and economic relations with the West. The Belarusian concept of multi-vectoral foreign policy implicates that together with better relations with the European Union, Minsk shall at the same maintain its strategic partnership with Russia. Additionally, another actor is becoming more and more prominent for Belarus: the People’s Republic of China. But at the moment the Minsk-Beijing relationship is still far from being a real partnership.
