Between political alienation and economic dependence

THE SINO-JAPANESE RELATIONS AFTER THE LDP ELECTION VICTORY AND THE CP CONGRESS

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzō Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping could vastly expand their political power this autumn. Both are now in a position to govern for years to come. Abe dissolved the Japanese Lower House in order to face down the opposition in the new elections. The coup succeeded. Abe wants to "reclaim" Japan. Xi Jinping was almost simultaneously appointed as the core leader of the Chinese Communist Party. He is now the undisputed leader of the Middle Kingdom, on par with Mao Zedong. Xi wants to realize the "Chinese dream". A collision course seems pre-programmed.

Decentralization Efforts in Jordan

The Municipal and Governorate Council Elections of August 2017

The governorate and municipal council elections of August 2017 were part and parcel of Jordan’s plans to formalize a framework for the country’s decentralization, building on plans of King Abdullah II. This framework was bolstered by new laws passed in 2015 which introduced the governorate council as a new, elected subnational advisory body. While the new governorate councils have the potential to increase local participation in the formulation of local development needs and service-provision, they have no legislative authority.

Keeping the Lights on During the Transition

The rapid rise of renewable energies and discussion about decarbonization have questioned traditional business models, not only in the energy sector. In the audio podcast, Antony Froggatt shared insights into the latest energy development in Europe and Asia.

Bundestag election in Germany on 24 September 2017

The results of the 2017 Bundestag election are ambivalent. Both major parties lost support. Of the small parties, FDP and AfD were able to mobilize support, while The Greens and The Left barely experienced notable changes. The CDU/CSU union performed best, thus constituting the largest faction with the mandate to form a government – which was nothing to be taken for granted after 12 years in power. Two options are conceivable politically: a Grand Coalition and a so-called “Jamaica coalition” consisting of the Union, FDP and The Greens, as currently governs in Schleswig-Holstein.
