India@75 – Celebrating Pursuit for Self-Reliance

PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry celebrated its 117th Annual session on September 30, 2022 at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi. The theme for the Annual Session was “India@75: Celebrating India’s Pursuit for Self - Reliance”. Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar was the Chief Guest for the Inaugural Session. While rendering his Inaugural speech the Hon’ble Vice-President of India lauded the role of industry in India’s growth story. He added that the Industry alone can catalyze a wholesome development of human resource, especially from the younger demographics. He opined that there is a need to make a platform where every talented person is in a position to exploit his/her talent and the need for systemic utilization of resources, both human and natural can never overemphasized.

The Hon’ble Vice President noted that affirmative steps being taken by the government as well as the industry has made India the fifth largest economy in the world today. One of the affirmative steps that make us proud, he pointed out was the startup ecosystem which today
boasts of 75,000 startups and 100 unicorns. He added that startups are turning out to be game changers. No one knows better than the industry that their younger generations is getting out-ofthe- box and meeting with success unheard of or imagined by the senior generation. It’s a
culture that’s taking roots in the hinterlands.

The Hon’ble Vice President added that the Gandhian ideal which the world has recognized with great deference is being reflected in the mantra of New India, which is “Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas Sabka Vishwas Sabka Prayaas”, with the growth engine being propelled by the industrial segment with the support of the government. He added that no one knows better than the industry that respect for India has grown around the world and carries a different kind of credibility today.

The Vice President, however, noted that there is section that is belittling the success of India, which includes efforts of the industry, the farmers, MSMEs among others. He added that the industry must step out sometimes and deal with this malaise which is disturbing the growth story.
He reiterated that the industry will find in him their foot-soldier and requested the chambers of commerce and business to come on a single platform, have a think tank of their own collectively, have consensual approach and identify issues to be addressed by the government.
Shri Dhankar was also accompanied by the Second Lady of India, Dr Sudesh Dhankhar.
Shri Pradeep Multani, President, PHDCCI, while welcoming the Hon’ble Vice President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar stated that India, in its 76th year of Independence and celebrating Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, stands as shining example of growth and stability amid the global
crisis. He shared that it is at a point which gives the industry and especially the youth have an opportunity to contribute towards making an affluent India when it turns 100 in 2047 and stand as a leading nation on the strength of our economic performance and vibrant democracy. He added that the New India will have numerous success stories to tell, demonstrate and sell to the world. He appreciated India’s recorded GDP growth rate for FY 2021-22 at 8.7%. Shri Multani also, talked about the economy which is showing strong resilience to the global geo-political shocks on the back of the strengthened macroeconomic foundations, led by efforts of the Government.

Shri Multani also appreciated the announcement of the initiatives made by Hon’ble Prime Mister Shri Narendra Modi for relief and credit support for business, especially MSMEs including an emergency working capital facility of Rs. 3 Lakh crore for both large and small enterprises.
Efforts must be made to increase the ease of doing Business for MSMEs and to ensure the effective implementation of existing reforms at the ground level. He further mentioned that the next 25 years of ‘Amrit Kaal’ would provide great opportunities to build a New India. A New India where, the economy will attain its potential growth rate of double digits and becoming the 3rd largest economy in World Ecosystem. He also opined that the manufacturing sector will be globally competitive; the agriculture sector will become sufficient not only to serve the domestic population but also will be significantly visible in the global agriculture and food exports. Mr Multani shared that millions of jobs will be created for the
growing young population and socio-economic development of the nation will move towards a developed Economy, with a manifold increase in the income level of the people, simplified and rationalized taxation system & ease of doing business at the highest level. He shared that there will be a New India with housing for all, education for all, easy access to medical and health facilities and strengthened women empowerment and safety.
The inaugural session of PHDCCI’s 117th Annual Session 2022 ended with a vote of thanks by Shri Saket Dalmia, Sr. Vice President, PHDCCI.

Business Excellence Award Session

The Business Excellence Award Session was held during the 117th Annual Meeting of PHDCCI on 30th September 2022, Hotel Taj Palace, Sardar Patel Marg, New Delhi.
The session commenced with Lamp Lighting by the Chief Guest, Shri Om Birla, Hon’ble Speaker of the Lok Sabha along with PHDCCI Leadership followed by the felicitation of the Chief Guest by Office Bearers of PHDCCI. Shri Birla released the 117th Year Book of PHDCCI and felicitated Shri Pradeep Multani, President, PHDCCI with a Silver Memento for his successful tenure as a President.

Shri Birla felicitated the Awardees in different categories for their outstanding achievements and accomplishments in different areas of business. Shri Manish Gupta, Chairman and Whole Time Director, Insolation Energy Limited was the winner under Distinguished Entrepreneur (MSME
Category), Shri Onkar Singh Pahwa, Chairman and Managing Director, Avon Cycles Limited was the winner under Distinguished Entrepreneur (General Category), Smt. Seema Sudha Prem, CEO, FIA Technology Services Private Limited was the winner under Outstanding Business Woman, M/s Agarwal Packers and Movers Limited was the winner under Outstanding Contribution to Social Welfare, Adani Total Gas Limited was the winner under Good Corporate Citizen and Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Chairman and Maganing Director, JK Tyre and Industries Limited was the winner under Lifetime Achievement.

He also felicitated Mr Shekhar Dutt, Former Governor of Chhattisgarh/ Defence Secretary and Jury of Business Excellence and Annual Awards for his valuable time in finalizing the Awardees and BGJC Consulting for defining the Process Architecture and grading the nominations and Grant Thornton Bharat for their Process Validation. Shri Birla in his special address highlighted the Chamber’s efforts to contribute towards India’s
economic journey. He urged everyone to support the new vision of changing India, to work towards new technology, new innovation and a New India.

He even highlighted that the objectives of Atma-Nirbhar Bharat can be achieved by strengthening local supply chains for Make in India, which can reduce India’s dependence on foreign countries thus, expanding its role in building Atma-Nirbhar Bharat, making the Make in India initiative visible not only in India but also globally in order to transform India into a manufacturing and export hub. He also emphasised on the new Education Policy which will be a game changer for the youth of our country by becoming more resilient, competitive and responsible as India is transitioning to a global knowledge super-power.

Shri Pradeep Multani, President, PHDCCI, in his welcome address extended his sincere gratitude to Shri Om Birla for accepting our invitation and sparing his valuable time to honour the Awardees. He apprised that India’s MSME sector is one of the most potent growth engines for the Indian economy. With the clarion call to Make in India and build an Atmanirbhar Bharat, the national expectations are pinned on this sector. He also highlighted that India’s greater and stronger supply-side interventions helped to improve its factors’ mobility. The pace of economic activity remains strong due to the structural reforms undertaken by the Government during the difficult pandemic times. He also mentioned that further expansion of trade and industry would be imperative to sustain the growing economic momentum.

Shri Saket Dalmia, Sr. Vice President, PHDCCI in his concluding remarks and vote of thanks thanked Shri Om Birla for his valuable address and other esteemed dignitaries for their deliberations. He in his address highlighted that getting honour from the most important person carries a great value in itself. He also apprised that PHDCCI works to spread education, equality and growth for all and will continue to support the government in spreading these initiatives. He also mentioned that education should not only be for knowledge and intellectual enlightenment anymore rather it should go one step further for innovation to improve our current rank of 40th in the most innovative country in the world.

Braving a New Post-Pandemic World – The Way Ahead for India Growth Story

PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry organized a PHDCCI’s 117th Annual Session 2022, India@75: celebrating India’s Pursuit for Self- Reliance, Plenary Session-1: Braving a New post- Pandemic World – The Way Ahead for “India Growth Story”, held on Friday, 30th September, at
Hotel Taj Palace, Sardar Patel Marg, New Delhi.

Hon’ble Union minister for Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal addressed as Chief Guest. Shri Pradeep Multani, President, PHD Chamber, gave his Welcome address. Shri Saket Dalmia, Senior Vice President, PHDCCI, provided the formal vote of thanks. Shri Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Union minister for Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Government of India stated that India’s growth story also emphasized that the Government means business for the business in India and will continue to focus on Ease of Doing Business (EODB), internal processes, and reduce burdens of compliances and certain laws on our businesses. He stated that the Government’s effort is to have single-window for the processes and approvals and not open any window behind the
window. While most countries are still facing difficulties and have not been able to come back to their actual strength after the pandemic, India has been able to shine as compared to other economies. The country continues to be a bright star in the world and has reined in the inflation numbers significantly compared to the rest of the world. Growth is possible when we move out of the old dichotomies and be bold and open for the new. He mentioned PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (PMGSMP) and called it an infrastructural marvel. He urged the industry members to invite the PMGSMP team and understand how this world-class structure works in implementation of services in stipulated times. Shri Goyal added that our country, under visionary leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, will be a US$ 30-trillion economy by 2047 when we complete 100 years and we will be much more aspirational. The India growth story will be second to none in the world.

The Hon’ble Union Minister for Commerce & Industry also lauded PHDCCI’s role in nation-building and called it a Chamber with a national outlook. He appreciated PHD Chamber’s efforts, its willingness to engage and think out of the box in providing suggestions to the Government. He hoped that PHD Chamber will continue to engage with the Government with a positive outlook for making India a developed nation.

Shri Pradeep Multani, President, PHD Chamber stated that the post-pandemic world will be a playground for growth and innovation for consumer businesses - both Indian and global, established and emerging. He stated that it is the decade of technology and in the field of IT, India has become a force to reckon with globally. We have the competencies to contribute in this techade. Shri Multani opined that with the rapidly changing global trade and investment dynamics, a more conducive policy environment for trade and industry would be crucial.

Shri Saket Dalmia, Senior Vice President, PHD Chamber in his vote of thanks stated and congratulated the Hon’ble Minister for launching PLI scheme, engaging in various FTAs and undertaking several other industry facilitative initiatives and contributing in nation building.

Plenary Session – II
“Make in India - A Success Story of India’s Defence Indigenisation”

PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) celebrated its 117th Annual Session on Thursday, September 30, 2022 at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi through Hybrid mode. The Theme for the Annual Session is “India@75: Celebrating India’s Pursuit for Self-Reliance”. The plenary Session-II of the annual Session was on “Make in India - A Success Story of India’s Defence Indigenisation”. Mr. Rajnath Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister for Defence, Government of India (Recorded Message) was the Chief Guest.

The Session was also graced with the presence of Lt. Gen. Baggavalli Somasekhar Raju, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, Vice Chief of Army Staff, Dr Adrian Haack, Director, India Office of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, Mr. Pradeep Multani, President, PHDCCI and the session was moderated by Ms Naghma Sahar, Senior Journalist, Senior Fellow, Observer Research Foundation.

Mr. Pradeep Multani, President, PHDCCI welcomed all the panelist. He also mentioned that the Space mission, Drone technology, Deep Ocean Mission, Blue economy etc. are the upcoming emerging field that will generate various employment opportunities for the youth across. Hon’ble Raksha Mantri said that the India government is focusing on innovative solutions to empower the country’s defence sector. Innovation in Defence Excellence (iDEX) worth Rs 498 crores for 5 years. The scheme aims to benefit 300 new startups for innovative design and development in the defence sector.

Lt. Gen. Baggavalli Somasekhar Raju, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, Vice Chief of Army Staff, highlighted that Indian Arm ‘Him Drone-a-thon’ make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives which aims to catalyse and provide focused opportunities to the Indian drone ecosystem to develop path-breaking drone capabilities for meeting the requirements of frontline troops.

Dr Adrian Haack, Director, India Office of Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung stated that India will be one of the third biggest defence industries in the world.

Plenary Session – III
“Making New, Inclusive and Prosperous India”

During the 117th Annual Session 2022, the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry hosted a panel discussion on Making New, Inclusive and Prosperous India on 30 September 2022 at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi.

Mr. Pradeep Multani, President, PHDCCI in his welcome remarks appreciated Shri Hardeep Singh Puri ji, Hon’ble Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs and Petroleum & Natural Gas for the reforms and path breaking initiatives undertaken under his Dynamic leadership for facilitating
ease of doing business. He also said that Investments in manufacturing has open up new employment opportunities and fuelled economic growth.  Mr. Multani briefly mentioned major path breaking initiative undertaken by the government of India that is path which will be a game
changer in the overall infrastructure development in the country as it aims to drive down logistic costs in India by streamlining and integrating infrastructure projects of various Central and state governments

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri ji, Hon’ble Minister for Housing & Urban Affairs and Petroleum & Natural Gas in his address applauded PHD Chamber for adding tremendous value and expertise to the discourse around business in India since its inception. He said, today India is the fifth largest economy in the world despite the hardships faced during the pandemic and is among the few countries whose growth prospects look promising. Initiatives such as improving the ease of doing business, promoting make in India businesses under the spirit of Atman, encouraging FDI, building a vibrant startup ecosystem and developing production linked incentive schemes have ensured that India is on track to be an economic superpower in the near future. Hon’ble minister also mentioned the integrative actions such as the National Logistics Policy and National Infrastructure Pipeline which will lead to efficient movement and allocation of goods, services, labour and capital in the new India that The Hon’ble prime minister Shri Narendra Modi ji has envisaged in this Amril Kaal. The vision of the Prime Minister is reflected in the Rejuvenation of Indian urban areas being witnessed today. In the pursuit towards inclusivity and equality initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Urban and
swachh Bharat Mission Urban which are bringing transformative change. In all ore than 16.44 lakh crores have been invested in Urban Development since 2014 which is a tenfold increase in investment that occurred between 2004 and 2014.

While concluding Shri Puri said “I believe it is going to be an innovation from the industry that will provide the thrust for the country's rapid economic growth in the near future PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry is playing a vital role in promoting industry trade and Entrepreneurship since its Inception the work done by the chamber has enabled it to develop a strong Network at the national and international level. I am confident that the chamber will continue to play an active role in helping India become a US dollar 5 trillion economy”.

Mr. Saket Dalmia, Senior Vice President, PHDCCI in his Vote of Thanks complimented the government for fully handling the energy crisis created by the continuing geopolitical disturbance in Europe and ensuring that India gets its energy resources at reasonable prices which perhaps singularly has signalled to the world that India counts and is strong enough to fend for itself. Mr. Dalmia also appreciated difficult and bold steps enacted by the ministry to master plan which has today helped revive the confidence of the home aspirant in India. He also said that PHDCCI remain as a chamber at the disposal of the Ministry and will ensure mutual and collaborative exchange of ideas and policies with the government open.

Panel Discussion
India@2047: Building Globally Competitive Companies

During the 117th Annual Session 2022, the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) hosted a panel discussion on India@2047: Building Globally Competitive Companies held on 30th September 2022 at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi. The industry leaders shared their perspective and experiences about their companies also talk about the measures that their companies took to overcome pandemic and achieve pre-COVID numbers despite numerous challenges and global disruptions. They unanimously agreed that innovation and positive approach kept them ahead of competition.

Shri Pushp Jain, Director, KLJ Group, talk about compound real estate business and further stated that his company started making plasticizer in India 25 years ago, and there were probably three or four grades of products. Today, it probably has more than 50-55 grades only in the plasticizer space. He added that in 20 years, they have grown from a startup to the world's largest. The key, he stated, is that you cannot move forward if you continue to do what you have done in the past. You must take a leap of innovation, whether it is in product development, resourcing, or service deliverables.

Shri Sahil Vachani, CEO & Managing Director, Max Ventures & Industries Ltd, who featured among the panelists, said that his company, whose main business is life insurance, has ventured into two new ventures, which are senior living and real estate. He stated that with commercial real estate, they have been able to create developments that are testament to the best quality of experience that can be provided not only in India. He also stated that they have pioneered the champion philosophy of bringing well-being or wellness into the office space. He added that they have created and developed a philosophy of 12 to 15 characteristics that have been embedded in our developments to improve the well-being of the framework in our buildings. For example, air quality, energy usage quality, waste generation, convenience, and comfort.

Shri Arjun Aggarwal, Managing Director, Aerodyne India Ventures Pvt Ltd, mentioned that the Industry is down with cash flow stated and opined that as a startup; they strive to bootstrap themselves for making themselves globally more competitive. Henceforth, he said that we should make the best use of the resources we have. He shared that one of their biggest errors was attempting to acquire talent on the cheap. The biggest lesson, he added, was to invest in people because the number of talented people you hire into an organization will directly affect its success. He added that if a company keeps the market and the customers’ interest in mind, and provides product quality, and delivery service, it will always be ahead of its competitors.

Shri Vicky Bahl, Partner – Growth, Grant Thornton Bharat LLP, said that in current scenario the definition of short, medium and long-term goal has already changed in most of the companies. He quoted the examples of few companies and said that planning for such a longer duration is itself a faulty mechanism. Hence we need to focus more towards short term planning goals as short term strategies are more about retention of business and how to invest your growth capital in the long term. He also said that there is an awareness of risk management among the people, so there are more strategic decisions being taken.

The session started with welcome remarks by Shri Saket Dalmia, Senior Vice President, PHDCCI, in which Shri Dalmia introduced the entire panelist and discussed about resilience of companies amid uncertain environment. The session was moderated by Shri Vishesh C Chandiok, CEO, Grant Thornton Bharat LLP, and the panel discussion came to a conclusion with Innovations boosted Our Companies in post pandemic and a vote of thanks by Shri Sanjeev Agrawal, Vice President, PHDCCI.

Ease of Doing Business in India

PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) organised its 117th Annual Session on 30th September 2022 at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi. To take the momentum further in policy space and celebrating “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” on 75th year of India’s independence and the glorious journey, PHDCCI proudly dedicated the deliberations of the Annual Session 2022 to the Hon’ble Prime Minister’ of India Shri Narendra Modi’s clarion call of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” with the central theme: India@75: Celebrating India’s Pursuit for Self-Reliance While relying on self-reliance for realising its own actual potential, the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan is not aimed to lessen India’s deep engagement with the rest of the world. In fact, the
mission is clearly aimed to open the world of opportunities for and from India. Industry stands together with the government to streamline the next course of industrial movement with focus on calibrating indigenous capacity.

During the 117th PHDCCI Annual Session, a panel discussion was organised on the theme “Ease of Doing Business in India”. Moderated by Ms Naghma Sahar, Senior Journalist & Senior Fellow, ORF and participated by Mr Deepak Bagla, Managing Director & CEO, Invest India; Mr Sanjay Dalmia, Chairman, Dalmia Group of Companies and Mr Kamlesh Jain, ED & COO (International), Varun Beverages Ltd, the panel discussion was centred on further improving the Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) and with a pursuit for continuing governmentindustry interface for desired outcomes.
With a fairly conducive Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) environment and relentless support to all sizes of businesses, India is already offering a new hope to the world in post-pandemic transition and this should encourage the industry to reach uncharted territories. The discussion of the key decision-makers from Invest India and the industry concluded on this note. Valedictory Session India’s Global Partnership Call in Alternate & Renewable Energy The Valedictory Session: India’s Global Partnership Call in Alternate & Renewable Energy was held during 117th Annual Meeting of PHDCCI, 30th September 2022, Hotel Taj Palace, Sardar Patel Marg, New Delhi.

The session commenced with a brief introduction and a short movie highlighting the activities done by PHDCCI in Green Hydrogen sector during International Climate Summit 2021 held at New Delhi and International Climate Summit 2022 held at Bergen, Norway.

Shri Pradeep Multani, President, PHDCCI in his welcome address extended a warm welcome to all the esteemed dignitaries. He mentioned that the well curated valedictory session covered PHDCCI’s and India’s initiative for making the world better by adoption of green hydrogen as an alternative energy source and various initiatives for mitigating the risk of climate change. He further mentioned that under the visionary leadership of our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, India has made remarkable progress in its renewable energy journey. India is committed to transform the energy landscape of the country with adoption of clean energy across different sectors to achieve the target of Net Zero Emission. He also mentioned that PHDCCI has been working on key policy advocacy roles at grassroots level for reassuring India’s leadership role in meeting the sustainable development goals. He apprised that the current global energy crisis has added urgency to accelerate clean energy transitions demand for energy rises worldwide, the growing need for tapping alternative energy sources that are not only greener, but also renewable and abundant in supply. He also mentioned that India would pave the way to explore opportunities in renewable energy to become energy independent and to export renewable energy to other nations in the long term, after meeting its own needs, to replace fossil fuels.

Dr J P Gupta, Managing Director, Greenstat India in his address mentioned that Green Hydrogen is not a rocket science rather a clarion call to manage climate crisis. He mentioned a famous quote by Mr. António Guterres, Hon’ble Secretary General, United Nations ‘It is time to stop burning our Planet and start investing in abundant renewable energy’. He mentioned that our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi is a nature-lover who made a clarion call to the world community to love the mother-nature and to save our One Planet. The initiative of Make in India is taking a quantum jump in renewable energy generation. He also mentioned that India surpassed all the commitments laid by the International Climate Summit at Paris Green Hydrogen and showed the world the way forward and has been accepted a world leader to fight climate change. He apprised that the role of energy is as important as the role of air and water for survival of mankind. He further mentioned that it is the need of the hour for the world community to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources like the sun, wind and hydro to tackle the climate crisis.

Mr Alok B Shriram, Sr. MD & CEO, DCM Shriram Industries Ltd. in his address mentioned that he was privileged to be the leader of the International Climate Summit 2022 at Bergen, Norway and thanked the Chamber to encourage this initiative as these are all ideas of the future. He mentioned that green hydrogen is the only clean form of energy and is the only way of the future. He mentioned that if the world shifts to green hydrogen, we can probably leave a cleaner Earth for our next generation. He also highlighted the experience from ICS 2022 at Bergen, Norway and mentioned that it is only a matter of time before hydrogen becomes economically viable as a lot of work on hydrogen is going on all over the world.

Mr Erik Solheim, Former Minister of Development & Environment in his virtual address mentioned that India is a place of environment inspiration as the country respects nature and has the opportunity to recycle and reuse in order to lead the way for developing clean energy. He even highlighted his experience from his visit to Tamil Nadu where a start-up, engaging mostly women who are making electric scooters and will soon roll out electric vehicles. He mentioned that a lot of inspiration is there to be gathered from India and will go a long way under a strong leadership under Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji who is dedicated to environment. He appreciated Shri Narendra Modi ji’s initiative of launching the Green Hydrogen Mission in India. He also encouraged India for building a robust Hydrogen Ecosystem in the country and was impressed by the way the production of electric vehicles has taken shape in India.

Dr Ajay Mathur, Director General, International Solar Alliance in his virtual address discussed that how we can move ahead on the larger issue of the global partnership that India can have in alternative and renewable energy. He apprised that whenever we look at any transition in history, it does not follow a linear trend rather it follows an exponential trend and if we look at hydrogen, we expect to see large increases. He mentioned that hydrogen is used largely in refinery sectors and fertilizers sectors. He further heighted the issue of certification i.e. the guarantee of origin which is lacking and requires an urgent attention by the legislators and regulators to allow national, regional and international trading in renewable hydrogen. He also highlighted that there should be a different harmonised standards framed for green hydrogen for vehicles and the industry to spur the sector since Green hydrogen standards are different from country to country, which legislators need to take into consideration while regularising the norms.
