Achieving Political Stability and Sustainable Peace in Sinjar
The atrocities committed by ISIS against the Yazidi community have caused immeasurable damage. In the wake of the initial attacks, nearly 360,000 Yezidi people were displaced, 1293 people were killed, 2,745 were orphaned, and 6,417 others were kidnapped (3,548 women and 2,869 men), according to the statistics of the Rescue Office for Yazidi Abductees in Dohuk and the Yazidi Endowment Department in Erbil.
These numbers indicate the fierce and deliberate targeting of the group, more than any other minority, although Christians, Shia Muslims, other minorities, and even Sunni Muslims who opposed the group also suffered horrific atrocities. The 2014 genocide caused a large-scale internal displacement that forced a large proportion of the Yazidi community to live in camps in the KRI for years without a clear future ahead of them. These displaced people face three options available to solve the problem of their displacement: return to Sinjar, permanent settlement in the area of displacement, or immigration outside Iraq. Each of these options carries its own challenges and limitations, and although some of the displaced have chosen to resort to one of these options, the fate of the majority remains unclear.
The project held 5 dialogue sessions in Sinjar, Mosul, and Erbil with 75 Yezidi activists (25 women, 50 men) who are leaders of the Yazidi community, activists in politics, clerics, and civic activists. The results of the sessions were extracted into a study presented as a successful management model in Sinjar, and it was also translated into a general policy paper to be adopted by the international community and the Iraqi government.
