Lebanese Constitutional Court Visit
President of the Constitutional Council Judge Tannous Mechleb welcomed the attendees and tackled many key topics along with Judge Dr. Mireille Najm-Checrallah, herself the only female member of the Constitutional Council.
The key topics that were discussed during the visit were the following:
- The creation of the Lebanese constitutional court.
- The requirements needed to apply for a membership on the council and the procedure of appointment.
- The jurisdiction of the council over electoral disputes and over constitutionality review.
- The importance of the Council as an independent judicial body.
- The role of the council in the protection of fundamental rights.
- The importance of the council’s decisions.
- The different methods of appointing constitutional court members.
- The challenges faced financially by the court and its impact on their autonomy.
The visit ended with a tour of the constitutional council premises.
