Post-ISIS Peacebuilding in Kirkuk
The great challenge facing Kirkuk’s people in the post-urgent phase calls for gaining the trust of youth and mobilizing their energies at various levels, foremost among which is the participation of young people of both sexes in the negotiation processes in conflict resolution, the drafting and implementation of peace agreements, the consolidation of national unity, and building active movements in the defense of human rights and public freedoms enshrined in the Iraqi constitution. As a result, Al Haq for Human Rights Culture (Al Haq), in collaboration with the Syria/Iraq Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), implemented a project which focused on activating the role of young people in the process of peacebuilding and social cohesion post-ISIS in the Kirkuk governorate:
Al-Haq conducted 3 trainings for a total of 60 young activists (male and female, mainly fresh graduates) from the Kirkuk governorate, aged between 18 and 30 years old. Participants were able to expand their knowledge on how to evaluate conflict, the different techniques and methods to be used in conflict resolution, peace building and mediation depending on each case, and the role played by mediation in resolving disputes. The training helped increase the level of cognitive skills of participants to a level where they can apply these principles later in their communities. It taught them the different methods of mediation and how to play an effective mediation role by approaching each group involved in the conflict tactically. The role play was practical and prepared the participants to real cases that they might face in their societies.
