Jean-Claude Mignon, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council wants to cooperate more with the EU

As being a European citizen himself who also has to pay tax money, Jean-Claude Mignon, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe spoke in Berlin at the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung about the needs for more cooperation between the Council of Europe and the European Union. “It is hard to explain a European taxpayer, that a Special Representative working for the Council and a European commissioner working for the EU, are doing almost the exact same thing.”

The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, urged in his Europe speech in Berlin for a ‘return to long-term thinking.’ “It makes perfect sense to arrange a speech on Europe to be given here, in Berlin, on this fateful date, 9 November. This is a clear message that Germany's past and Europe's past are just as inextricably linked as Germany's future and Europe's future are.”

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, in cooperation with the South African think-tank The Brenthurst Foundation, jointly organized the workshop „From Liberation Movements to Government – Past legacies and the challenges of transition in Africa” in early October. An impressive panel convened in Cadenabbia at Lake Como: former liberation fighters, politicians from the era after the liberation movement, experts and researchers with longstanding Africa-experience.

Junior diplomats from the Palestinian Territories visiting Berlin and Brussels

Meeting with Members of the European Parliament and the German Bundestag

Seven Palestinian junior diplomats visited Brussels and Berlin following an invitation by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS). The visit, which was organised by the Domestic Programmes Team in cooperation with the foundation’s external offices in Ramallah and Brussels, provided the Palestinian diplomats with the opportunity to speak with Members of the European Parliament, such as the chairman of the KAS Hans-Gert Pöttering, MEP and with Members of the German Parliament.

For media to shape political culture, legal and ethical framework needs to improve

Since the onset of the Arab Spring the media have been crucial in helping the Arab states on their path to democracy. But what role do they play in the process of shaping a new political culture in the region? During a panel discussion hosted by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung at the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum 2012 in Bonn, participants analysed the environment in which the media is operating and shed light on questions of ownership and the legal situation, drawing conclusions on what is needed for the media to assume their role.
