All back on board?

The NATO summit sets course after difficult years

For NATO, the past few years have sometimes been marked by internal political disagreements. At the same time, the threat level to our common security has remained high. In the face of this complex situation, the NATO Summit in Brussels now offers a welcome opportunity to open a new chapter at the right time. For the first time, the summit will be held under the attendance of newly elected U.S. President Joe Biden. Hopes are as high for his impetus as they are for the by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg recently established NATO2030 initiative. What course will the alliance take in the coming years? On which aspects will it strongly focus in the future? How can NATO become more resilient?

For the NATO, the past few years have been marked by internal political disagreements now and again. At the same time, the threat level to common security has remained high. In view of the dangers posed, for instance, by terrorism, cyber-attacks, the rise of China and the destabilizing behaviour of Russia, a resilient defence remains imperative in an increasingly complex world order. Moreover, issues such as climate change, the growing demand for resources or, currently, the Corona pandemic go beyond the common challenges in security policy.

In the face of this complex situation, the NATO summit in Brussels now provides a welcome opportunity to enter a new chapter at the right time. For the first time, the newly elected U.S. President Joe Biden will be among the participants. Hopes are as high for his impetus as they are for the recent initiative of the Secretary General of NATO. As part of the NATO2030 reflection process, Jens Stoltenberg set up an expert group of ten members, whose final report presented concrete proposals that will be discussed at the summit. What course will the Alliance take in the upcoming years? What aspects will it focus on in the future? And how can NATO share the efforts and burdens fairly?

In our online event on Thursday, June 17, 2021 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. (CET), we will address these and further questions. We are looking forward to our guests Dr. Thomas de Maizière, Member of the German Bundestag, former German Minister of Defence and Co-Chair of the NATO2030 Expert Group, Ambassador Rüdiger König, Head of Germany’s Permanent Delegation to NATO, as well as Dr. Jana Puglierin, Head of the European Council of Foreign Relations in Berlin.
