Dr. Jan Woischnik was born on February, 7th, 1970 in Freiburg, Germany. After attending school in Stuttgart he studied Law in Heidelberg, Hamburg and Freiburg from 1990 to 1994. In 1995 and 1997 he took his law degree exams (Erstes und Zweites Staatsexamen) in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, with distinction and was admitted to legal practice.
From 1998 to 1999 he completed a Doctorate (PhD) on Argentinian law, supervised by Prof. Dr. Walter Perron, University of Mainz, and supported by a scholarship from the Lang Hinrichsen Foundation. This included two research projects to Buenos Aires, supported by the Max Planck Society.
At the beginning of his career, Jan Woischnik worked for four years (1996-1999) as Research Assistant for International Criminal Law and Spanish Speaking Latin America at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg. In 2000 he was appointed International Lawyer to the Human Rights Chamber for Bosnia and Herzegovina by the German Foreign Ministry (Auswärtiges Amt) in Sarajevo for nine months.
Subsequently, Jan Woischnik moved to Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, a German political foundation. From 2001-2006 he was Head of office in Uruguay and also in charge of the cross-national Rule of Law Programme for South America, a regional legal development programme. From 2006 to 2011 he worked at the headquarters of the foundation in Berlin, responsible for the South East Europe Section and for the worldwide Rule of Law Programme.
From August 2011 - August 2015 Jan Woischnik was Head of office at Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Afterwards he was head of the KAS office in Brazil until 2019, based in Rio de Janeiro. Since October 2019 Jan Woischnik is head of the Latin America team of the EIZ department.
Jan Woischnik has published and co-published more than 40 monographies, manuals and articles in Germany and other countries. Within Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung he has edited more than 80 publications. He is fluent in English and Spanish and proficient in French, Italian and Bahasa Indonesia.
