Media strengthens democracy

African media experts visit institutions of press freedom in Germany

It is not media in Europe alone that are in a crisis. In many african countries the credibility of media is being questioned and declining advertising revenues threaten the existence of many publishing houses. In addition, the climate between media and the state institutions of media control is worsening.

To observe how the German media landscape works, five senior editors and representatives of media supervisory boards from Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe are visiting institutions of press freedom in Germany. Accompanied by Christoph Plate, the head of the KAS media program for sub-Sahara Africa, talks were held at the end of April in the Federal Ministry of Justice, the German Press Council, the Federal press conference and of course with media experts from KAS.

Gwendo Ogaro, head of the Kenyan news agency KNA, expressed his appreciation of the initiative of German media, for example in the Federal Press Conference. Discussions on the Network Enforcement Act, which came into force in January, to control hate messages in social networks, was met with great interest, as in Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe the opportunities and dangers of Social Networks are as well being discussed.

At the CDU National Headquarters in Berlin, the five participants discussed with CDU federal managing director Klaus Schüler the development of the German media landscape and the not always easy relationship between politics and journalism.

On the further trip to Stuttgart, the experts from Africa held talks with the media expert of the CDU in Baden-Württemberg, Raimund Haser, as well as with representatives of the Regional Media Institute and the Southwest Radio Station SWR. The aim of the talks was to document the importance of media and media control. "This trip is an inspiration," said George Sarpong, chairman of the Ghana Press Council.
