Greetings from Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, New-Delhi and Madras Management Association, Chennai!
In India, the world's largest democracy, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, public perception of governance is bound to have changed as never before. From the decision of imposition, enforcement and phased withdrawal of nation-wide lockdown, to the problems of migrant labour and management, loss and re-creation of jobs and family incomes, all are going to have a short and medium term impact on the voter psyche.
The recoveries both economic and societal, are going to be the acid-test of good governance and will shape the the political and electoral manifestos in future elections to come.
What does it all mean for our political system and electoral scheme? Is it an opportunity to bring in electoral reforms that have been craved for decades? What more can be done to enhance the representativeness of elections as a basis of democracy?
