John Kerry, der Herausforderer von George W. Bush, ist in Europa, im Gegensatz zum amtierenden Präsidenten der USA, ausgesprochen beliebt. Seine Popularität wird unter anderem auf seine europäischen Wurzeln, seine liberale und multilaterale Einstellung zurückgeführt. Es ist aber kaum damit zu rechnen, dass ein Präsident Kerry einen grundlegend neuen Kurs in der amerikanischen Außenpolitik einschlägt.
