The Afghan-Pakistani Relations

Trapped in their Security Dilemma

Geneva Barometer

Developments in the Geneva-based international organizations between May and July 2019

Over the last few months, diplomats as well as staff members of international organizations in Geneva were kept on the move: in the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the International Labour Organization (ILO), numerous heads of states and governments came to Geneva. In addition, several high ranking meetings and conferences took place, such as the annual World Health Assembly (WHA) and the 41st session of the UN Human Rights Council. Reports on the future of world trade (WTO), on land use and climate change (IPCC, „World Climate Council“) as well as on global refugee trends were looking at the future with concern.

“Less(ik) is more“

The 2nd European Games might attract more tourists at lower costs – a European Sports spectacle in a country which itself is in motion

Minsk is just a few days away from a major sporting event that could be a loss-making venture despite moderate total costs. Nevertheless, the city is happy and has the opportunity to parade itself to international guests and the media. This could help further promote a more pragmatic, improved relationship with the West, as relations with Russia remain tense and the host country becomes increasingly affected by a number of economic problems.

Indonesia has voted

President Jokowi wins the election in Indonesia

President Joko Widodo, known as Jokowi, has won the presidential election clearly with 55.5% of the vote and can now continue to govern the country for another five years. His challenger, ex-General Prabowo Subianto, who came to 44.5% of the vote, does not want to admit his defeat and will appeal against the result at the Constitutional Court for alleged election manipulation. The official election results were announced by the Indonesian Election Commission KPU on the 21th May 2019, one month after the actual Election Day, but one day earlier than the scheduled deadline on 22 May.
