Information Technology, Justice and Human Rights

KAS and Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto is working on a joint Land Meeting on "Information Technology, Justice and Human Rights" in November 2021.

Due to the uncertainty of the pandemic, this topic needs to be addressed on an urgent basis and as such, a preliminary virtual meeting was then organized on 11 March 2021,  where we have approximately 22 participants ranging from researchers, law practitioners, bureaucrats and judicial officials from Germany, United Kingdom, France, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan were invited to discuss issues relating to information technology, justice and human rights and how it will affect us globally in the future.

A keynote speech from Prof. Chien-Liang Lee, Research Professor and Director of the Institutum Jurisprudentiae, Academia Sinica on "E-Justice in Taiwan".  Prof. Lee briefly touched on the structures of the e-Justice  that being e-administration and e-litigation with the objectives to enhance the transparency of legal process, increase the efficiency of legal system and allow resource sharing.  However, the management of e-documents and the court's external communication, especially, in respect of the procedures of keeping e-files and the use of online legal platforms which are currently fraught with legal problems.

Participants discussed similar issues and problems faced which resulted in a lively open virtual discussion.
